BMW begins Gen6 high-voltage battery production in Shenyang, its third global site

BMW Group has started series production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries in Shenyang, China — the third plant in a global network supplying its next-generation Neue Klasse electric cars.

What Happened

The BMW Group has begun series production of its Gen6 high-voltage batteries in Shenyang, China. Shenyang is the third location in the company's new global production network for Gen6 battery technology, following Debrecen in Hungary and Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Germany. The high-voltage batteries produced locally will form the energy core of future Neue Klasse models built in China, and manufacturing them near the vehicle plants shortens transport routes and supports a stable, resilient supply chain. The company calls the approach 'local for local': industrializing key future technologies close to the market under uniform global standards.

“The high-voltage battery is a key component of our all-electric vehicles and one of the BMW Group's most important technologies for the future. The start of Gen6 battery production in China demonstrates how quickly and systematically we are industrializing our latest technology across our global production network. This creates a key prerequisite for the successful global ramp-up of the Neue Klasse. Production in Shenyang exemplifies our global approach: We manufacture locally, efficiently and close to our markets, in line with uniform global standards and the highest quality.”

The Gen6 high-voltage battery is the new battery generation for the all-electric models of the Neue Klasse. Its newly developed cylindrical cells use a cell-to-pack concept: the cells are integrated directly into the battery housing, eliminating the conventional module level, which makes more efficient use of the available installation space and allows flexible integration into different vehicle models. A central control unit called the Energy Master, developed by the BMW Group, sits directly on the high-voltage battery and consolidates essential power-supply and battery-management functions.

Global Gen6 high-voltage battery production network
  • Shenyang, China — third location, series production now underway, supplying Neue Klasse models built in China
  • Debrecen, Hungary
  • Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany
  • Woodruff, USA — series production to begin in the coming months
  • San Luis Potosí, Mexico — series production to begin in the coming months
How a Gen6 high-voltage battery is assembled
  • Battery cells are inspected and joined with the cooling units to form cell clusters
  • After laser cleaning, the cell clusters and cell contact system are precision-welded together
  • A specialized foaming process bonds the components into a single mechanical unit, contributing to safety, stability and longevity
  • The housing is closed, sealed and riveted
  • The Energy Master is installed in the final assembly step
  • Every high-voltage battery undergoes a complete end-of-line test for quality, safety and functionality

Production combines high-precision manufacturing with end-to-end digital quality assurance. Production data is captured and analyzed throughout the entire process, and digital twins, data analytics and AI-supported inspection methods help detect deviations at an early stage and ensure traceability. Inline inspection systems monitor laser-welded joints in real time. Uniform production, quality and safety standards apply worldwide, while each location contributes its regional manufacturing and supplier expertise.

Previously from BMW

BMW's wider sales picture has been mixed as it expands battery production. The group delivered 1,707,799 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, a 4.9 percent global decline, even as Europe rose 4.5 percent and the US 3.4 percent. Business in China remained challenging over that period.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of BMW's official releases.

Why this matters

This is a concrete step in BMW's plan to build its newest battery technology close to where the vehicles are made. For buyers of upcoming Neue Klasse models built in China, it means locally produced batteries that BMW says offer more than 20 percent higher energy density and up to 30 percent faster charging than the previous generation. It also shows how the company intends to roll the same technology out across Europe, the US and Mexico.
