What Happened

The Neue Klasse launch marks the first time BMW offers an expanded portfolio of active safety assistance systems as standard across multiple model series, starting with the BMW iX3 and followed by the BMW i3, BMW X5 and BMW 7 Series. The exit warning, already standard on many BMW models, is now expanded with an active door opening delay: using side radars, the system monitors approaching traffic and delays door opening when a collision risk is detected. Dooring accidents — when a parked car's door opens into traffic, particularly dangerous for cyclists — accounted for 392 accidents and 8% of all bicycle accidents in Berlin in 2024, according to the German Insurance Association.

The broad rollout of our new active safety functions as standard is based on our 'Smart, Symbiotic, Safe' philosophy. We bring drivers and assistance systems together into a cooperative system that works in harmony. At BMW, active safety functions operate as quiet, intelligent companions in the background, discreet yet highly effective when it matters most in critical situations.
Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience Development at BMW Group

BMW Symbiotic Drive creates an intuitive partnership between driver and vehicle by understanding driver intent through steering inputs and line of sight, intervening only when necessary. For example, Lane Keeping Assistant gives warnings or steering interventions only on unintended lane departure or imminent collision, and stays quiet during deliberate manoeuvres if no risk is foreseeable. Indicators of intent include activating the turn signal, making an active steering input, or performing a shoulder check. All active safety, automated driving and parking functions run on a central water-cooled 'Superbrain of Automated Driving' computer with approximately 20 times the computing power of the previous system. BMW Panoramic iDrive presents the driving situation on the Central Display, Panoramic Vision, or optional 3D Head-Up Display.

New active driving safety features
  • Emergency steering intervention — automatically steers around an obstacle while keeping the vehicle in its own lane, such as a person stepping onto the road or an overlooked cyclist; currently unique among competitors, it also helps avoid side-impact collisions by gently steering away within the lane.
  • Emergency Brake Assistant with evasive steering support — prevents imminent head-on collisions by braking up to full deceleration; improved sensors also assist with animals on the road and wildlife crossings.
  • Road Priority Warning — displays recognized traffic signs in the BMW Panoramic Vision in the driver's field of view, now including crosswalk warnings in addition to red lights, yield, stop and no-entry signs.
  • Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop — if the driver camera detects the driver is no longer fit to drive, it temporarily takes control, brings the vehicle to a controlled stop, activates hazard lights and triggers an eCall; the driver can override at any time.
Parking and manoeuvring safety features
  • Active Park Distance Control — uses ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras to apply the brakes at the rear and, for the first time, on the sides, stopping the vehicle when stationary or moving objects are detected.
  • Emergency braking function for cross-traffic — when backing out of a parking space, rear side radars scan the area and the rearview camera and bird's-eye-view display on the Central Display provide visibility, preventing accidents with cyclists and other road users.
  • Start monitoring — detects pedal misapplication such as confusing the accelerator with the brake; if an obstacle is less than one metre away at speeds up to 2 km/h and the accelerator is depressed unusually rapidly and forcefully, the vehicle brakes in a controlled manner, forward or backward, until it stops.

BMW says customer-consented data from 1.3 million connected vehicles in Europe demonstrates the effectiveness of these systems. In the last month alone, the fleet covered 1.6 billion kilometres, alerted customers around 8 million times via visual and acoustic warnings, and active steering and braking interventions helped prevent 243,977 potential collisions. The new BMW iX3 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating, significantly exceeding the required scores under test protocols revised in 2026. The Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov, Czech Republic, which opened in 2023, contributed to the development; at around 600 hectares with approximately 25 kilometres of test tracks, it is BMW's largest proving ground, complementing virtual simulations and millions of kilometres of testing on public roads in extreme heat, snow and ice across Europe, North America, South Africa and China.

The Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov is much more than a proving ground for us. It is a central component of our development strategy enabling us to bring innovations in advanced driving assistance systems to series production quickly, safely and with a clear customer focus. This unique testing environment allows us to recreate real-world driving scenarios under highly demanding and reproducible conditions. As a result, we are reinforcing the BMW Group’s technological leadership for the long term.
Dr. Martin Sautter, Senior Vice President Vehicle Certification at BMW Group

Why this matters

New BMW buyers won't need to pay extra for these safety features—they come standard on every Neue Klasse model. The enhanced exit warning can physically delay door opening to avoid hitting cyclists, directly addressing a common urban danger. A new 'Superbrain' computer with 20 times the power underpins the systems, and the first model has already earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
