dSPACE and MathWorks Expand Partnership to Link RoadRunner with ASM OpenX

dSPACE and MathWorks are expanding their partnership so road models built in RoadRunner can be used directly in dSPACE's ASM OpenX traffic simulation, speeding up autonomous-driving development.

What Happened

dSPACE and MathWorks have expanded their partnership to let developers use road models created in MathWorks' RoadRunner editor directly in dSPACE's ASM OpenX traffic simulation. The integration is built on the open standards OpenSCENARIO XML and OpenDRIVE, which the companies say make traffic simulation more efficient and reduce development time. Developers of autonomous driving applications can now work across a wide range of road models and operational design domains (ODDs).

RoadRunner capabilities
  • Interactive editor for designing detailed road models and 3D scenes as well as scenarios
  • Programmatic APIs for efficient customization
  • Supports the OpenDRIVE and OpenSCENARIO standards
  • Proven in a comprehensive evaluation to complement ASM OpenX, especially for providing road models in OpenDRIVE
ASM OpenX vs. previous ASM traffic models
Previous ASM traffic models
Required error-prone and time-consuming conversion of scenarios and road models, plus manual rework
ASM OpenX
Native use of OpenSCENARIO XML and OpenDRIVE eliminates conversion and significantly reduces manual rework
By combining the ASM OpenX with RoadRunner as a powerful road editor, we enable our customers to simulate traffic scenarios much more efficiently and cost-effectively on a wide variety of road models and thus in a very broad range of operational design domains (ODDs). In close coordination with MathWorks, we have created a seamless and practical solution.
Thorsten Püschl, Product Manager at dSPACE
Our collaboration with dSPACE reflects a shared commitment to accelerating innovation in autonomous vehicle development. Integrating RoadRunner and ASM OpenX empowers engineers to work more efficiently with open standards and deliver safer, more reliable automated driving technologies.
Peter Fryscak, Product Manager, MathWorks

Why this matters

For beginners: this integration lets engineers simulate traffic scenarios without converting road models between proprietary formats, saving time and reducing errors. It means autonomous vehicle developers can test across a broader range of road types and operational design domains, which supports the goal of safer, more reliable automated driving technologies. The companies say the open-standard approach makes simulation simpler, more robust, and more ef…

Terms in This Story

OpenDRIVE
An open standard file format for describing road networks for driving simulation.
OpenSCENARIO XML
An open standard format for describing dynamic content in driving simulation scenarios.
Operational Design Domain (ODD)
The specific conditions, such as road type, speed range, and weather, under which an automated driving system is designed to operate.
