Euro NCAP welcomes Swiss accident prevention council as affiliate member

Switzerland's road-safety research body BFU is joining Euro NCAP as an affiliate member to share accident data and help shape safety ratings.

BFU's accident prevention work
nearly 90 years

What Happened

The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) conducts research and offers guidance aimed at reducing the number of serious accidents in Switzerland. For nearly 90 years, it has worked to make Swiss citizens safer both on the roads and in their everyday lives. Joining Euro NCAP as an Affiliate Member will reinforce the safety programme's network of collaboration and advance progress in vehicle safety and accident prevention.

As an Affiliate Member, BFU will actively participate in Euro NCAP's Technical Working Groups, contributing to shared goals in vehicle safety and the long-term development of assisted and automated driving technologies. BFU will provide Swiss accident insights and national data, drawing on expertise in engineering, human factors, and behavioural science to identify where safety systems can prevent severe crashes.

BFU's planned contributions to Euro NCAP include:
  • Providing Swiss accident insights and national data
  • Combining expertise in engineering, human factors, and behavioural science
  • Supporting the alignment of assessments with evolving regulations
  • Promoting road safety and public acceptance of new technologies
  • Contributing to the development of Euro NCAP's future strategic roadmaps
Euro NCAP is delighted to have BFU as an Affiliate Member of the Car Programme. Their strong expertise in accident research and prevention, together with a unique Swiss perspective and their contribution to our technical working groups, will help ensure that our ratings continue to reflect real-world risks and drive meaningful vehicle safety improvements.
Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General Euro NCAP
At BFU, we are very pleased to become a new member of Euro NCAP. Euro NCAP's independent safety ratings provide important impetus for manufacturers, policymakers and consumers alike. As BFU, we aim to contribute to ensuring that new vehicle technologies realise their full potential in preventing accidents and reducing serious injuries. We see this membership as a major opportunity to amplify the i
Dr. Stefan Siegrist, Director BFU

Affiliate Members benefit from participation in Euro NCAP activities and events, including industry meetings and Manufacturers' Viewings, while at the same time contributing to a growing network of organisations committed to safety with a common goal of reducing road fatalities and serious injuries.

Why this matters

BFU brings nearly 90 years of Swiss accident research and national crash data to Euro NCAP's technical working groups, helping ratings reflect real-world risks. The collaboration supports the long-term development of assisted and automated driving technologies and gives Swiss citizens a direct voice in vehicle safety assessments. Manufacturers, policymakers, and consumers all rely on Euro NCAP's independent ratings.
