What Happened
The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) has set out how O category trailers will need GB Type Approval from 1 February 2027, after which they cannot be sold or used on roads in Great Britain without it. Applications take up to six weeks to process. The agency has published a four-step application route, four free webinars and a set of frequently asked questions to help companies prepare. Applicants will need a VCA portal account and GB Conformity of Production clearance.

- Gather the documents and technical information listed in the VCA requirements list.
- Submit the application through the VCA portal.
- Allow up to 6 weeks for processing.
up to 6weeks
Applications may take up to six weeks, and the VCA expects an uplift in volumes as the February 2027 deadline approaches.
- You need a VCA account to use the digital portal, with guidance on the portal sign-in page.
- GB Conformity of Production (CoP) clearance is required for GB type approval.
- Applications are commonly delayed because supporting documents are incomplete or insufficient.
- No further inspection or retesting is needed if you already hold the required evidence to demonstrate compliance.
- Applications may take up to 6 weeks, so avoid contacting VCA teams while your application is within that window.
The VCA is running four free webinars to guide applicants through the GB Type Approval process step by step. Each session covers what you need to prepare and how to use the VCA portal, and answers common questions. The webinars run from 21 October 2026 to 12 January 2027. Applicants facing a specific challenge with their application can also check the frequently asked questions or contact the VCA directly.
Previously from Vehicle Certification Agency
Today's trailer requirement follows the earlier extension of the same regime to other vehicle types: full GB or UKNI type approval became mandatory from 1 February 2026 for all M and N category vehicles sold in Great Britain.

Why this matters
Trailer manufacturers, importers and sellers must apply through the VCA portal and hold GB Conformity of Production clearance before the 1 February 2027 deadline, and applications can take up to six weeks to process. The VCA expects application volumes to rise as February approaches, so businesses that leave it late risk missing the cut-off.
