What Happened
MAN Truck & Bus has published a life cycle assessment (LCA) that for the first time scientifically confirms the environmental benefits of its MAN Original Remanufacturing of combustion engines at the Nuremberg plant. The study, performed by the University of Bayreuth and validated by an independent expert commissioned by DEKRA Assurance Services GmbH, compared a newly built rail engine MAN D2842 LE622 with a MAN Original remanufactured engine of the same type. MAN says its philosophy is 'recondition instead of replace' as part of a focus on the full product lifecycle.

The study notes that combustion engines will continue to be needed where high power is required in tight spaces, machines stay in service for a long time, and no suitable alternative drive is currently available — for example rail applications, especially dual-mode operation, commercial shipping, and power generation. In those cases, extending product lifecycles can reduce the emissions caused by producing new products. The LCA followed DIN EN ISO 14040 and 14044, and its results refer exclusively to the D2842 LE622 and the defined system boundaries.

The study also provides scientifically based evidence of the importance of remanufacturing in MAN's service and parts business.
