What Happened

Pony.ai announced a strategic agreement with JD Auto Service, JD.com's automotive maintenance and services business, to build a standardized and scalable maintenance and spare-parts support system for autonomous vehicle fleets. The partnership adds an important layer to Pony.ai's operating infrastructure as it scales its Robotaxi fleet from more than 1,700 vehicles to a targeted fleet of over 3,500 vehicles across more than 20 cities worldwide by the end of 2026.

Current fleet size

1,700+vehicles

Pony.ai's Robotaxi fleet as of the announcement, with a target of over 3,500 by end of 2026.

Robotaxi commercialization is as much an operational challenge as it is a technology challenge. As our fleet grows, vehicle availability, service consistency and lifecycle costs become increasingly important drivers of unit economics. This partnership adds a standardized maintenance layer to our operating platform, helping us scale more efficiently while maintaining the safety and service quality
Dr. James Peng, Founder and CEO of Pony.ai
Initial deployment cities
  • Beijing
  • Shanghai
  • Guangzhou
  • Shenzhen

The collaboration will begin in these four cities before extending to additional major Chinese cities, with designated service locations, tiered parts inventory and off-peak maintenance capacity designed to reduce turnaround times. The companies will also jointly develop maintenance procedures for Robotaxis and integrate their systems for work-order dispatch, service tracking, acceptance and settlement. Pony.ai aims to reduce downtime, improve fleet availability during peak demand, and achieve better unit economics through lower maintenance costs and efficient parts procurement.

Previously from Pony.ai Inc.

In June 2026, Pony.ai CEO James Peng stated that the company's robotaxi fleet was approaching 2,000 vehicles and that regulation was the key bottleneck to scaling up to a target of 50,000. Today's partnership with JD Auto Service addresses the operational infrastructure needed to support that scaling.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of Pony.ai Inc.'s official releases.

Why this matters

This partnership addresses a key operational challenge for Pony.ai: keeping robotaxis on the road and generating revenue. By leveraging JD Auto Service's nationwide network, Pony.ai can reduce downtime, lower lifecycle costs, and accelerate expansion into new cities without building its own maintenance infrastructure. For riders, it means more reliable and widely available robotaxi services as the fleet grows.
