What Happened
Renault has rolled out a series of battery and efficiency revisions across the R5 E-Tech subcompact hatchback. The entry Urban Range specification replaces its original 40 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery with a cost-optimized 36.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, achieving a certified WLTP radius of 196 miles (equivalent to 315 km).
The entry variant supports domestic AC charging at 6.6 kW and DC fast-charging up to 80 kW. Concurrently, the upper Comfort Range trim maintains its 52 kWh battery while achieving an extended WLTP range of 267 miles (430 km)—up from 255 miles—achieved through redesigned door mirrors, optimized underbody air management, and revised motor software calibrations.
The introduction of LFP cells is part of a broader push by Renault Group's Ampere EV business unit to integrate lower-cost battery chemistries across its compact electric vehicle architectures.
Why this matters
