Tata Motors Launches India's First Hydrogen Truck Trials

Trucks deployed

16

Trial duration

24 months

Operational range

300-500 km

What Happened

Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has launched the first-ever trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks. The trial was flagged off by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi, along with Tata Motors' Executive Director Girish Wagh. The initiative is funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Trial scale

16hydrogen-powered trucks

will be tested over 24 months on key freight routes.

Hydrogen is the fuel of the future with immense potential to transform India’s transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance.
Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways

The trucks feature both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technologies, with an operational range of 300–500 km. They will be deployed on routes including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.

Why this matters

These trials, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, could accelerate India's transition to sustainable long-distance freight transportation and help achieve its 2070 net-zero target.
