BMW Group wins technology award at China's WNEVC for its Gen6 high-voltage battery
The BMW Group has taken the Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress in China for the Gen6 high-voltage battery that underpins its Neue Klasse electric cars.
- 800 volts
- More than 500
- Fifth consecutive year, sixth time overall
- 400-volt and 800-volt
What Happened
The BMW Group received the Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology award at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC) in China. The judges recognised the key technologies of the BMW Gen6 high-voltage battery, which is based on the new BMW round cells with a high-nickel cathode, and paid tribute to the company's holistic approach to developing high-voltage batteries. According to BMW, it is the only automotive manufacturer from outside China to receive one of the WNEVC's technology awards. This marks the fifth consecutive year, and the sixth time overall, that the BMW Group has been recognised for technological innovation at the congress.
“We are very proud to receive this international award for our Gen6 high-voltage battery. It confirms our long-term approach of combining technological innovation with the highest standards of quality and safety and genuine customer relevance. With the Neue Klasse, we are setting new benchmarks in this area.”
The Gen6 high-voltage battery is a key technology of the Neue Klasse and brings together BMW's own development and production expertise across the entire value chain, from cell chemistry and the development and production of the high-voltage battery through to its integration into the vehicle. BMW says it lays the foundation for greater range, faster charging and a new dimension of long-distance electric capabilities. Designed as a global offering, it is built to meet the highest safety requirements worldwide. Safety was the highest priority in its development, with the new round cells featuring a steel housing and integrated safety mechanisms.
More than 500
BMW says it filed patent applications for more than 500 innovations in making the jump from the fifth to the sixth generation of its eDrive technology.
- New BMW round cells with a high-nickel cathode and a steel housing with integrated safety mechanisms
- An 800-volt architecture across the entire Gen6 battery portfolio
- A cell-to-pack design, with cells integrated directly into the battery without a module structure
- An in-house-developed Energy Master with both hardware and software
- Bidirectional charging capability
- A multi-stage insulation concept plus comprehensive thermal and energy management
“The Gen6 high-voltage battery represents a technological leap across all customer-relevant features. Its innovative, flat design with cylindrical cells paves the way for greater range and faster charging, while maintaining the highest level of safety. As a core technology of the Neue Klasse, it forms the foundation for fully-electric driving pleasure across the entire BMW portfolio.”
The sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology forms the technological foundation of the Neue Klasse and will be introduced gradually across the BMW Group's entire fully-electric portfolio. The system combines the new BMW round cells, BMW's in-house Energy Master hardware and software, and the systematic integration of the battery into the vehicle architecture. Mounted on the high-voltage battery, the Energy Master manages the energy flow, supplies power to the e-drives and the vehicle's electrical system, and serves as the interface for data from the battery. It is compatible with both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructure and enables bidirectional charging, while the overall system is designed for technology openness so that other cell technologies can be integrated.
Why this matters
The Gen6 high-voltage battery is a key technology of the Neue Klasse, so this award is outside recognition for the hardware that will define BMW's next generation of fully electric cars. BMW says it was the only automotive manufacturer from outside China to receive one of the congress's technology awards. The company also says the battery is designed to work with both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructure.
Terms in This Story
- high-voltage battery
- The main traction battery in an electric vehicle, which stores energy at high voltage and powers the electric drive.
- cell-to-pack
- A battery design in which individual cells are built directly into the battery pack without intermediate modules, which can save space and weight.
- bidirectional charging
- A capability that lets a vehicle battery both draw electricity and send it back out, for example to power devices or feed energy into a grid.
- round cells
- Battery cells with a cylindrical shape, as opposed to prismatic or pouch cell formats.
