What Happened
Ducati is marking its Centenary year with a new collaboration: Piquadro has created four Special Edition backpacks that pay tribute to some of the most memorable chapters in the Italian motorcycle manufacturer's history. The backpacks draw on four historic Ducati liveries that the Borgo Panigale-based company has brought back to life on its latest-generation motorcycles to celebrate 100 years. The two Italian brands are also expanding their partnership beyond the celebratory project, adding a range of backpacks, trolley bags and accessories designed for business and travel. The Special Edition backpacks are available in Piquadro monobrand boutiques from 19 October.
Cook Neilson takes a historic victory at Daytona on the 750 Super Sport “California Hot Rod”, the livery later reinterpreted on the XDiavel V4 100.
The 900 Sport Desmo Darmah and the 500 SL Pantah appear; their liveries inspire two of the Piquadro backpacks.
Marco Lucchinelli wins the Battle of the Twins at Daytona on the 750 F1, the Tricolore livery that inspires the Superleggera V4 Centenario Tricolore.
The Special Edition backpacks go on sale in Piquadro monobrand boutiques.
Ducati and Piquadro announce the four Special Edition backpacks and the wider travel collection.
- 900 Sport Desmo Darmah (1979): its black and gold, with a distinctive tiger head, recalls the aesthetics of motorsport in the 1970s and 1980s and was revived on the Streetfighter V4 S 100.
- 750 Super Sport “California Hot Rod”: reinterpreted on the XDiavel V4 100, it celebrates Cook Neilson's historic victory at Daytona in 1977.
- 500 SL Pantah (1979): the inspiration behind the Multistrada V4 RS 100, it marks a fundamental technical turning point for Ducati thanks to the introduction of the first Trellis frame and the new Pantah engine.
- 750 F1: its Tricolore, from the motorcycle with which Marco Lucchinelli won the Battle of the Twins at Daytona in 1986, inspired the Superleggera V4 Centenario Tricolore.
Three of these historic liveries are part of the Collezione 100, a project unveiled at the Mugello Circuit that comprises ten models, each produced in a limited and numbered edition of 100 units and combining historic liveries with the design and technology of today's motorcycles. They are joined by the Superleggera V4 Centenario Tricolore, also produced in just 100 units, which Ducati calls the most high-performance, technologically advanced and sophisticated road-legal motorcycle ever created by a motorcycle manufacturer. It is precisely this dialogue between past and present that inspires the four Piquadro backpacks, bringing Ducati's colours, graphics and historical references beyond the world of two wheels.
“The Centenary is an opportunity to celebrate our history, but also to find new ways to tell our story. The four Special Edition backpacks created with Piquadro are a great example of this: they reinterpret some of the most iconic liveries of our motorcycles through the language of an Italian brand with which we share the passion for design and attention to detail. We are delighted that this collaboration continues to grow and finds new forms of expression in a collection designed to accompany enthusiasts in their everyday lives and on their travels.”
“Companies with a rich history should not simply celebrate it: they must continue to draw on it to evolve. This is what connects us to Ducati. We share a culture in which design, technology and performance are tools for continuously pushing the boundaries of what a product can achieve. These four backpacks draw on a hundred years of history, but above all, they tell the story of what we are interested in building together: the future.”
Beyond the celebratory project, the partnership between Ducati and Piquadro extends to a new collection of backpacks, trolley cases and accessories designed for business and travel. Ducati says this evolution brings together Piquadro's expertise in designing products for everyday mobility with its own culture, which has always been rooted in technology, performance and a passion for beauty. The Special Edition backpacks are available in Piquadro monobrand boutiques from 19 October, and all the models in the Collezione 100, with the stories that inspired them, can be discovered on the official Ducati website and the Ducati Media House.
Why this matters
The story shows how Ducati is turning its 100-year history into products beyond motorcycles, sold through a fashion partner's own boutiques. Enthusiasts and shoppers see the same four historic liveries on limited-run bikes and on everyday bags, while both Italian brands extend a collaboration that now covers business and travel gear.
