What Happened

Hesai Group announced that Yole Group has ranked it the world's leading robotaxi lidar supplier in its Robotaxi 2026 report. Hesai held a 62% share of the global robotaxi lidar market in 2025, more than all other suppliers combined, up from the 61% share in Yole Group's previous report. The company says the finding reinforces its leading position in a market entering a new phase, as robotaxi programs expand toward larger-scale fleet operations.

Hesai's share of the global robotaxi lidar market in 2025

62%

More than all other suppliers combined; Yole Group's previous report put Hesai at 61%.

According to the Yole report, Hesai's lidar has been selected for leading Level 4 robotaxis and autonomous vehicles programs worldwide, including Baidu Apollo Go, Pony.ai, WeRide, DiDi, Motional, Aurora and KargoBot. The breadth of these deployments reflects growing adoption of lidar across multiple robotaxi platforms and operating environments rather than reliance on a single customer or program. As operators expand their fleets, Yole says they will need lidar that delivers precise perception in complex environments, consistent automotive-grade quality and reliable supply at scale.

Robotaxi market milestones and projections
  1. 2025

Hesai holds a 62% share of the global robotaxi lidar market, and the global robotaxi fleet stands at approximately 10,000 vehicles, according to Yole Group.

  2. June 2026

Hesai's cumulative lidar deliveries surpass 3.5 million units.

  3. 2027

Hesai's new manufacturing facility in Bangkok, Thailand, is expected to commence production.

  4. 2031

Yole Group projects the global robotaxi fleet will grow to 331,000 vehicles.

Hesai is advancing a next-generation lidar platform for the next phase of autonomous driving, centered on an upgraded ETX, its flagship lidar platform for Level 3 and higher autonomous driving. Powered by Hesai's proprietary Picasso SPAD-SoC, the next-generation ETX combines RGB sensing and time-of-flight ranging at the chip level, capturing both the geometry and color of its surroundings in a precisely aligned point cloud. It offers configurations of up to 4,320 channels and a maximum detection range of up to 600 meters, designed to give systems a more detailed view of distant objects and complex driving scenes. The Picasso-equipped ETX is undergoing customer validation and has progressed to RFI and RFQ discussions with leading robotaxi operators and global automakers.

“Robotaxis are moving into an important next phase, with operators increasingly focused on scaling deployment and delivering reliable autonomous mobility in real-world environments, and that raises the bar for every component on the vehicle. Operators need perception they can rely on across more vehicles, more roads and more hours of operation. Our continued market leadership reflects the trust we have earned through years of close collaboration with robotaxi developers, and our ability to deliver at scale.”
— Dr. Yifan “David” Li, Hesai's Co-Founder and CEO

Hesai is also scaling its manufacturing capabilities to support anticipated growth in autonomous mobility, with its highly automated in-house production lines running at 100% automation across core processes and rolling out one lidar unit every 8 seconds. The company says these manufacturing investments, together with its next-generation product development, position it to support automakers and autonomous-vehicle customers as their programs move toward larger deployments.

Previously from Hesai Technology

Earlier in October, Hesai pitched a 6D full-color lidar built on the Picasso ASIC platform it unveiled in April, describing it as one sensor that delivers chip-aligned color and depth for autonomous driving and Physical AI. Its pitch was that a single sensor could merge color and depth on one chip rather than relying on separate devices.

Why this matters

The ranking lands as robotaxi fleets are projected to grow from roughly 10,000 vehicles in 2025 to 331,000 in 2031, so the sensor supplier operators pick now shapes what large-scale autonomous fleets can rely on. Because Hesai's lidar is used by Baidu Apollo Go, Pony.ai, WeRide, DiDi, Motional, Aurora and KargoBot, several competing robotaxi operators depend on the same supplier.

Terms in This Story

lidar
A sensor that uses laser light to measure distances and build a 3D picture of the surroundings.
SPAD-SoC
A system-on-chip built from single-photon avalanche diodes, light detectors sensitive enough to time individual laser pulses returning to the sensor.
time-of-flight
A ranging method that measures how long a light pulse takes to travel to an object and back, from which distance is calculated.
Level 4 robotaxi
An autonomous vehicle rated to drive without a human taking over within a defined operating area, typically run as a paid ride service.
