What Happened
Volkswagen Group delivered 6.01 million vehicles worldwide in the first nine months of 2026, down 9 percent from 6.60 million a year earlier, and third-quarter deliveries fell 14.3 percent to 1,885,300. Growth in South America, Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe was more than offset by market-related declines in China and North America. In Europe, deliveries rose 1.7 percent to 2,956,000 vehicles, with Western Europe up 1.1 percent, Central and Eastern Europe up 5.3 percent and the home market of Germany up 0.9 percent.
- 680,200 vehicles, down 4.0 percent; U.S. down 7.8 percent
- 502,500 vehicles, up 4.3 percent; Brazil up 12.3 percent
- 1,591,300 vehicles, down 27.9 percent; China down 30.2 percent
Worldwide BEV deliveries reached 678,700 vehicles by the end of September, down 5 percent from 717,700 a year earlier, though growth momentum in Europe accelerated to 20 percent in the third quarter. Volkswagen Group says it remains the clear BEV market leader in Europe, where its BEV share rose from 18 to 20 percent after nine months. BEV order intake in Europe rose by more than 60 percent in the third quarter versus the prior-year period, and the recently launched Electric Urban Car Family, comprising the VW ID. Polo and ID. Cross, Skoda Epiq and CUPRA Raval, has drawn nearly 150,000 orders to date. Order intake across all powertrains in Europe rose 4 percent in the first three quarters and the order book grew around 11 percent versus year-end 2025, with the BEV share of the order book rising to around 40 percent.

Global deliveries of plug-in hybrids and range-extenders reached 368,000 vehicles, up around 23 percent from the prior-year period, as demand for second-generation PHEV and EREV powertrains increased. In China, deliveries of electrified vehicles rose around 30 percent in the third quarter compared with the prior-year quarter, with PHEV and EREV models in particularly strong demand. In the U.S., BEV deliveries fell 78 percent amid the expiration of government subsidy programs and continued high pressure from import tariffs. In China, the new locally developed electric models are generating positive momentum in a significantly declining market.

Previously from Volkswagen Group
Volkswagen Group had already pledged a "For Europe" push ahead of the Paris Motor Show, built on European value chains, sustainable jobs and key technologies, with closer cooperation between business and politics at its core. Days later it laid out the industrial plan behind that agenda, pairing scaled platforms and AI-driven development with a four-model electric family that has drawn almost 150,000 orders.

Why this matters
The figures show a shrinking global business, with declines concentrated in China and North America while Europe grows only slightly. They also show how much the group's electric sales now depend on European buyers: around 40 percent of its European order book is for all-electric models, even as BEV deliveries collapse in the U.S. after government subsidy programs expired and amid continued import tariffs.
