Volvo CE opens Indian sales for its 65-tonne EC650 mining excavator

What Happened

Volvo Construction Equipment India announced the EC650's Indian commercial debut at the Greater Noida trade fair on September 15. The machine sits in the 65-tonne class and is the company's flagship move into India's heavy mining excavator segment. Buyers in that segment can take delivery straight away, a timing the company tied to the opening of the buying season.

Volvo CE powers the EC650 with its D13E engine, rated at 435 horsepower. The design pairs a heavy-duty boom with a reinforced arm, a strengthened undercarriage, and hydraulics meant to keep working while loads stay high on tough sites. The company frames durability and fuel economy as the two qualities it chased, and says Indian mining buyers now weigh those same factors heavily as running costs and the need to keep projects moving shape their decisions.

Dimitrov Krishnan, Volvo CE India's managing director, said the EC650 was intended for Indian mining operations that need reliable, fuel-efficient equipment as the sector works at greater scale and intensity.

What filled the two Volvo CE stands
  • Construction zone: the EC210, EC215 and EC220, a 20-tonne family for road building, city work, quarrying and riverbed mining, plus two soil-compaction machines and a battery-electric L120 loader for lighter duties.
  • Mining zone: EC480 and EC650 excavators are shown beside the L150 loader, with the layout organised around how the machines are used rather than by product category.

The EC650 is also covered by Volvo CE's Equipment-as-a-Service offer, which lets a customer run a machine without buying it outright. The company calls the scheme one way to lower the barrier to advanced equipment, aimed especially at mid-sized operators that lack the capital for a large purchase.

Other details from the exhibit
  • Volvo CE says its Bengaluru Technology Centre will work on research and development, localisation and new product ideas for India and selected overseas programmes.
  • The official event page ties the display to Volvo's Aaj Banayein Kal campaign and presents mining equipment for demanding operations.

Why this matters

The EC650 gives Indian mining firms a locally launched heavy excavator from an established brand, and a rental-style route to obtain it that may suit contractors without big capital budgets. It also shows makers competing for a market where fuel bills and keeping machines running shape what buyers choose.
