What Happened

Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Edizione Luna Rossa special series a few hours before the second Preliminary Regatta for the 2027 America's Cup, which takes place in Napoli from September 24 to 27. The line-up covers the Junior, Tonale, Giulia and Stelvio and is positioned at the apex of the offering of each model. It marks a further development of the partnership between two Italian icons who share the same vision: to innovate relentlessly, excel in sport and constantly push their limits. The special series will be progressively marketed in all European markets and follows the Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa, a special series produced in only ten units, all of which have already been sold. The reveal video is called Wind Trail.

“Alfa Romeo and Luna Rossa are two authentic expressions of Italian excellence, united by the same ambition to bring to the world the constant ability to innovate and a quest for performance that accepts no compromises. This partnership goes far beyond sport and is fueled by shared expertise, technology and vision, with the aim of continually pushing the limits. Today in Napoli, on the way to the first America's Cup held in Italy, this bond takes on an even stronger value and the new Edizione Luna Rossa is its most concrete expression, bringing to the road the pride and passion that make Made in Italy unique in the world.”
— Santo Ficili, CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati

Junior and Tonale Edizione Luna Rossa share an immediately recognizable aesthetic characterization built on a new gray inspired by the hues of the Personal Flotation Devices worn by the Luna Rossa team on board, crossed by the iconic Luna Rossa liner that runs along the side like a line under tension traced out by the wind; black and white body colors are also available. The dedicated red Alfa Romeo logo and a body kit with Gloss Black finish reinforce their identity, and the two cars are differentiated by their alloy wheels: 18-inch Gloss Black on the Junior and new 20-inch Gloss Black wheels on the Tonale, available exclusively on Luna Rossa. In the passenger compartments, dark shades and red accents create a coherent environment, with the dedicated red Alfa Romeo logo on the steering wheel. The Junior offers specific door and seat panels combining premium materials with gray details, stitching and the Luna Rossa logo, plus dedicated graphics on the dashboard and central tunnel, while the Tonale combines seats in premium fabric featuring the Luna Rossa logo with new tone-on-tone gray stitching on the dashboard and door panels and black trim on the center console, door panels and air vents. The interior's most innovative element is 3D Knit technology for the seat upholstery, a technology applied for the first time within Stellantis, whose continuous thread processing uses a single component and a single lining, reducing the use of materials and processing waste; on the Junior the central tunnel and dashboard fascia upholstery introduces graphics inspired by the structure of the sails, while on the Tonale that theme is reinterpreted through a new Ambient Light with a geometric pattern, and both cars have aluminum sports pedals and an aluminum kick plate with Alfa Romeo lettering.

Junior and Tonale Edizione Luna Rossa: standard equipment and powertrains
  • Infotainment and instruments: latest-generation Alfa Connect system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, integrated satnav and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus the customizable digital Cannocchiale instrument cluster, 10.25 inches on the Junior and 12.3 inches on the Tonale.
  • Comfort: Keyless systems, electrically folding wing mirrors, automatic climate control (dual-zone on the Tonale with the Air Quality System), Passive Entry, heated mirrors, Alfa DNA selector, paddle shifters on the steering wheel on Hybrid and Q4 Hybrid versions, heated front seats, electrically adjustable driver's seat with electric lumbar adjustment and massage function, heated steering wheel and electrochrome interior rear-view mirror.
  • Driver assistance: Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, sign recognition and driver attention monitoring; the Junior adds Blind Spot Monitoring, front, rear and side sensors and a camera with dynamic guidelines, while the Tonale adds front and rear parking sensors and a Brembo sports braking system with red brake calipers.
  • Junior Ibrida: 145 hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine and 6-speed eDCT automatic transmission, in front-wheel drive or Q4 configuration.
  • Junior Elettrica: 115 kW (156 hp) with a 54 kWh battery and automatic transmission.
  • Tonale: Plug-In Hybrid Q4 with a 270 hp 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic transmission and Q4 all-wheel drive; Hybrid with a 175 hp 1.5-litre four-cylinder and 7-speed TCT automatic transmission; Diesel with a 130 hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder and 6-speed TCT automatic transmission.

Giulia and Stelvio Edizione Luna Rossa express the most exclusive spirit of the special series through an essential chromatic and material approach that makes extensive use of carbon fiber, bringing the link between Alfa Romeo's sporting DNA and high-performance sailing competition to the fore. Both are available in white as standard, with black and Etna red extra series as options, and adopt a specific Luna Rossa logo on carbon-fiber rear-view mirrors, dedicated red Alfa Romeo logos and dedicated details, with carbon fiber also used for the front badge; on the Giulia, the side skirts and spoiler recall the stylistic language of the Quadrifoglio version. Specifically designed dark wheel rims come with red brake calipers, 19-inch on the Giulia and 21-inch on the Stelvio, and the passenger compartment is defined by a monochrome interior interrupted by targeted accents: the Luna Rossa liner crossing the seats, carbon inserts on the dashboard and a material contrast between leather and 100% recycled ECONYL fabric made with nylon obtained from fishing nets recovered from the seabed. Leather-upholstered dashboard and door panels are paired with extended carbon-fiber decorations on the dashboard, center console and doors, completed by the specific red Alfa Romeo logo on the steering wheel and Luna Rossa graphics on the dashboard. Standard equipment includes two exclusive features, the Harman Kardon Hi-Fi system and electronically controlled suspension, with the electric sunroof standard on the Giulia and optional on the Stelvio. Both models are equipped with the 160- or 210-hp 2.2 turbodiesel paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive on the 160-hp version and Q4 all-wheel drive on the 210-hp version, while the 280-hp 2.0 GME petrol engine is available in the UK and in non-European regions.

The Alfa Romeo simulator stood as the technological and methodological precursor within the Stellantis simulator network, the first to adopt the most advanced hardware platform on the market, and its know-how now serves as a reference throughout Stellantis and contributes to best practices in new simulators globally. Alfa Romeo has provided Luna Rossa with its expertise in simulation, vehicle dynamics and virtual analysis, and is collaborating in the drafting and fine-tuning of the control software for the circuits that set Luna Rossa's sails in motion. That software is initially tested in the Luna Rossa simulator to verify its operations virtually, then released for navigation on the actual boat and tested by the crew, with the shared goal of accelerating development, better understanding the behavior of the systems and identifying innovative solutions ahead of the physical testing phase. Since the partnership was announced in June 2025, several members of the Luna Rossa team took part in the 43rd 1000 Miglia aboard a 1956 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint belonging to the Heritage Hub Italy collection, usually on display at the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, and the Giulia Quadrifoglio Luna Rossa will go on display during the Preliminary Regatta in Napoli. The regatta leads up to the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, the oldest competition in the world, to be held for the first time in Italy with the Luna Rossa team in the running, where the crews will refine handling, tactics and organization before taking to the AC75s in the 2027 America's Cup.

Previously from Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo has been expanding its presence in the sailing world: earlier in September it was named Official Car of the 2026 Genoa International Boat Show, where it will provide a courtesy fleet and static displays at the Levante Waterfront from October 1 to 6. The Junior, one of the four models in the new special series, has also been a sales driver for the brand, with Alfa Romeo reporting double-digit sales gains in the UK, Japan and Mexico in the first half of 2026 led by the new Junior compact SUV.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of Alfa Romeo's official releases.

Why this matters

The Edizione Luna Rossa is the first time the partnership's design language reaches Alfa Romeo's mainstream line-up, having previously been limited to a ten-unit Giulia Quadrifoglio. Buyers in Europe can order the Junior, Tonale, Giulia and Stelvio versions, which sit at the top of each model's range. The partnership also flows back into Alfa Romeo, which lends its simulation and software expertise to the Luna Rossa sailing team.
