What Happened

BYD commenced commercial sales of its third-generation Qin Plus DM-i saloon on October 27, 2026, offering buyers in China longer pure-electric operating range and a larger physical footprint across three trim levels.

The saloon has grown significantly over the previous generation, extending length to 4,840 mm, width to 1,900 mm, and wheelbase to 2,800 mm. Those modifications yield an additional 82 mm between the axles and 60 mm of overall length.

Power comes from the manufacturer's fifth-generation DM dual-mode hybrid architecture, pairing a 74 kW naturally aspirated 1.5-liter petrol engine with a 120 kW electric drive unit. Customers choose between 16.2 kWh and 24.3 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate packs built on Blade cell chemistry, delivering 140 km and 220 km of electric endurance under China's light-duty test cycle. Total cruising reach extends to 2,290 km when drawing on the 65-liter petrol reservoir.

Cabin refinements include a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a floating touchscreen running DiLink 150 software. For automated navigation, premium grades can be specified with a roof-mounted lidar sensor tied to the company's DiPilot 300 driver-assistance package.

Why this matters

The redesigned compact sedan is one of BYD's highest-volume nameplates, making this upgrade central to maintaining its market lead against competing compact electrified models. By bundling fifth-generation hybrid hardware, available roof-mounted lidar, and extended battery options at an introductory price of 76,900 yuan, the automaker is raising standard equipment levels across China's entry saloon segment.
