Ford Reimagines 1964 Aurora Concept Car with AI Filmmaking for National AI Day

Ford used AI filmmaking tools to create a retro-futuristic video reimagining the debut of its 1964 Aurora concept car on National AI Day.

What Happened

In 1964, Ford unveiled the Aurora concept station wagon at the New York World's Fair, featuring a built-in TV, three radios, an oven-refrigerator combo, a beverage cooler, and a kids’ playroom. The vehicle also had a steering bar instead of a wheel, a sunroof that could switch from opaque to transparent, and a dashboard map that showed real-time position before GPS existed. Ford called it a 'dream car.'

The Aurora was one of Ford's 'X-cars,' styling experiments not meant for sale. It boasted 23 unique design features, including a three-zone interior with a front command post, a central lounge with a swivel armchair and curved sofa, and a rear 'romper room' for kids with its own radio and climate control. Other innovations included electroluminescent body-side 'spears,' a bank of 12 one-inch headlamps, and a clamshell rear-entry system.

Aurora's Appearances
  1. 1964

Debuted at the New York World's Fair.

  2. 1968

Appeared at the HemisFair in San Antonio, described as a 'rolling laboratory of new ideas.'

These types of imagination and engineering do work their way back into real products.
Ted Ryan, Ford archivist and historian

For National AI Day, Ford's archives team used AI filmmaking tools to produce a video imagining how the Aurora might have been revealed in the 1960s with modern technology. The video features a cross-country road trip through Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Death Valley, Route 66, and Michigan roads, showcasing the car's features as part of the journey.

We're not claiming to be designing a new vehicle. We're bringing an old property to life in a new way. The Aurora was designed to show what the American station wagon of the future could be. And now we’re combining the past with the future in the present.
Ted Ryan, Ford archivist and historian

Why this matters

This project shows how automakers can use modern AI to celebrate their heritage and explore design ideas. It gives enthusiasts a fresh look at a historic concept that influenced future production features like GPS and rear-seat entertainment.
