What Happened

Ford's 5.0-liter V8 race engines are tested to extremes no street car would ever see, revealing weaknesses like the camshaft drive that are then strengthened and carried into the production 5.0-liter Coyote V8. This race-to-road development cycle aims to break powertrains before customers buy them, turning failures into opportunities for product improvements.

Engines pushed to their limits are sent to facilities like the Essex Engine Plant, where mechanics tear them down daily to hunt for weaknesses.

Weaknesses found during testing become opportunities for product improvements, such as the camshaft drive upgrade. Without racing, Ford might not have developed this feature for retail customers, who now benefit from increased durability in tasks like towing heavy loads with an F-150 or lap times in a Mustang Dark Horse.
