Škoda Octavia becomes the brand's first full hybrid, with orders opening in October
Škoda has made the Octavia its first full hybrid, pairing a 1.5 TSI petrol engine with two electric motors that switch automatically between all-electric, series and parallel operation.

What Happened
The Octavia's full hybrid powertrain combines two electric motors, a 1.5 TSI evo2 combustion engine, a single-speed automatic transmission and an automatic clutch that provides a direct mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the driven wheels on the front axle. The smaller electric motor primarily acts as a generator while also starting the combustion engine, while the larger and more powerful traction motor drives the front wheels and recuperates energy during braking. Depending on driving conditions, the system automatically switches between all-electric, series hybrid and parallel hybrid operation to maximise efficiency. All transitions between modes are controlled automatically.
“The Octavia is the first Škoda model to feature a full hybrid powertrain. Its series-parallel hybrid system combines a combustion engine with the flexibility of electric driving. Operating fully automatically, the system selects the most efficient drive mode according to the current conditions. The traction battery is recharged while driving by the combustion engine or through energy recuperation. With two output levels available for both the hatchback and estate, the full hybrid adds another technically versatile option to our powertrain portfolio giving customers even greater choice to match their individual needs.”
- All-electric: the traction motor powers the vehicle using energy stored in the traction battery, enabling a range of up to approximately two kilometres without starting the combustion engine.
- Series hybrid: the combustion engine powers a generator that produces electricity for the traction motor driving the wheels; used primarily at speeds of up to approximately 60 km/h, when the battery state of charge falls below a defined level, or when the driver demands stronger acceleration.
- Parallel hybrid: the combustion engine is mechanically connected to the driven wheels via the clutch and a single fixed gear ratio, with the traction motor able to provide additional support; used at speeds above 60 km/h and during steady driving.
- 100 kW system output; 1.5 TSI petrol engine producing 96 kW
- 125 kW system output; 1.5 TSI with maximum output of 110 kW
- Identical electric motors; electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h
1.6 kWh
State of charge is automatically maintained between 40% and 90%; the battery sits under the rear seats and supports up to about 2 km of electric-only driving. It is charged while driving by the combustion engine or through recuperation — external charging is not required.
The full hybrid Octavia is available as a hatchback and an estate in Selection and Sportline trim levels. Compared with models powered solely by combustion engines, standard equipment additionally includes a 13-inch infotainment display, a 10-inch Virtual Cockpit and a HYBRID badge on the tailgate. The car has a 40-litre petrol tank, and luggage capacity stands at 460 litres in the hatchback, rising to 1,400 litres with the rear seats folded. For the estate the corresponding figures are 485 litres and up to 1,540 litres.
Orders open for the Octavia full hybrid.
First customer deliveries scheduled.
Previously from Škoda
Škoda Auto's Kvasiny plant has produced its one-millionth Karoq and is modernising its paint shop while adding a chassis pre-assembly section so it can build plug-in hybrid and hybrid models. That earlier capacity work came as the plant continued its paint shop modernisation.

Why this matters
The Octavia is the first Škoda model to offer a full hybrid powertrain, adding a technically versatile option to the brand's portfolio so customers have more choice to match their needs. It gives buyers short electric-only driving without ever plugging in, since the battery is charged by the engine and by braking recuperation. Orders open in October and the first customer deliveries are scheduled for December 2026.
Terms in This Story
- Series-parallel hybrid
- A hybrid layout that can drive the wheels either through a generator and electric motor (series) or with the combustion engine connected mechanically to the wheels (parallel), switching between the two automatically.
- Recuperation
- Recovering energy during braking and storing it in the traction battery so it can be reused for propulsion.
- Traction battery
- The battery that stores energy for the electric motor driving the wheels; in this car it is charged by the combustion engine and by recuperation rather than by an external plug.
- State of charge
- The amount of energy currently remaining in a battery, expressed as a percentage.
