What Happened
Mazda Motor Corporation has developed a new body color called Zinc Green Metallic, which will debut on the Mazda MX-5 (soft-top) and MX-5 RF (retractable hardtop). The color is inspired by the appearance of zinc chromate primer, a protective undercoat used in industrial applications, translating functional toughness into a refined aesthetic.
According to Mazda, the color shifts character with lighting: in low light it appears solid and powerful, while in bright light the bluish metallic flakes create a delicate sheen that highlights the body's sculptural lines. The company says it has offered approximately eighty shades of green to date, and this is the first green option for the fourth-generation MX-5.
- Inspired by the color and texture of zinc chromate primer
- Bluish metallic flakes with optimized particle size and alignment
- Appearance changes with lighting conditions
- First green color for fourth-generation MX-5
Why this matters
The new color caters to strong customer demand for green shades, of which Mazda has offered about eighty over its history, and marks the first green for the current MX-5 generation.
