TRATON Financial Services Develops Financing Models to Boost Battery-Electric Truck Adoption
What Happened
Per-Eric Ericsson, head of e-mobility financing at Scania Financial Services, is building financial solutions designed to de-risk the transition to battery-electric fleets. The focus is on intensive knowledge building and best practice sharing across the organization, resulting in increased trust and stronger collaboration between finance and product sides. A recent example is a partnership with Swedish recycling company Renall, where Scania provided a comprehensive solution including vehicles, depot charging, and an operating lease.
“If we’re good at financing electric vehicles, we sell more of them. And that means we contribute to a sustainable transport system.”
- Usage-based payment models tied to battery performance
- Piloting charging-infrastructure financing with Scania's charging company Erinion
- Bundling services with vehicle and financing to reduce complexity
- Rental fleet as a bridge for customers not ready to commit fully to electric
BEV adoption is currently centered in Europe due to mature infrastructure and grid capacity. In regions like Latin America and Africa, infrastructure is not yet ready, but solutions developed in Europe can be scaled later. Depot charging is key because it lowers costs and ensures trucks are fully charged overnight, making electric trucks more business-sensible than diesel for many customers.
Why this matters
Financing makes electric trucks more affordable and less risky, encouraging fleet operators to switch from diesel and accelerating the shift to sustainable transport.
