Bentley Appoints Stefan Marjoram as Artist in Residence at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Stefan Marjoram, a world-renowned automotive artist, has been serving as Bentley's artist in residence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. During the event, he has produced original drawings of classic and contemporary Bentleys, including the new Flying Spur S. Marjoram uses an iPad to create his works, allowing spectators to see the drawing process through animations.

Marjoram employs different styles for modern and classic subjects. For new cars like the Flying Spur, he uses a bolder, more graphical approach inspired by American car designers of the 1950s, working on black Canson paper. For older Bentleys, he adopts a classical style reminiscent of red chalk on toned paper with white chalk highlights.

His process begins with careful measurement to establish correct proportions, then progresses to adding arcs, line weights, and detail work. Marjoram notes that he leaves some areas loose to guide the viewer's focus, similar to photography. He previously spent 10 years as a Creative Director at Aardman Animations, the Oscar-winning studio behind Creature Comforts.

Marjoram prefers drawing from life rather than photographs, as it allows better decisions and interaction with the audience. At Goodwood, he enjoys chatting with onlookers and encouraging young artists to pursue their passion despite warnings about career instability. He first attended the Festival 30 years ago and never imagined he would one day work there for Bentley.
