What Happened
On April 27, CATL and HyperStrong signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Ningde, Fujian, covering 60GWh of sodium-ion battery supply over three years. This is the world's largest sodium-ion battery supply agreement and represents a milestone for industrialization of sodium-ion technology.
60 GWhgigawatt-hours
World's largest sodium-ion battery supply deal.
CATL has enhanced sodium-ion battery energy density through morphology control and surface modification, and solved mass production challenges like foaming and moisture control. The batteries offer wide temperature adaptability, high-temperature cycle life, and improved safety.
The batteries use a platform-based design with the same form factor as lithium-ion, ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure and reducing adaptation costs. This shortens the time from product readiness to deployment.
Why this matters
Sodium-ion batteries offer a safer, cheaper alternative to lithium-ion, and this large-scale deal shows the technology is ready for mass production and deployment.
