What Happened
On December 27, 2025, the China Federation of Industrial Economics named FAW-Volkswagen, the joint venture of FAW and Volkswagen AG, as a 2025 top runner for industrial carbon peaking. The award recognizes the company's excellent practices in green and low-carbon transformation, including a digital low-carbon upgrade to its painting process that saves 8,521 tons of CO2 annually, and the adoption of low-temperature degreasing hydraulic cavitation technology saving another 1,540 tons.
8,521tons of CO2
This initiative is the only auto enterprise case in the National Development and Reform Commission's Typical Cases of China-EU Green and Low-Carbon Development Cooperation.
- Clean electricity proportion at off-site bases raised to 51% through photovoltaic construction.
- Signed green steel agreements with seven steel manufacturers; low-carbon steel first used in Audi A5L in 2025, with full vehicle application by 2030.
- Audi A5L received Low-Carbon Pioneer Certification and Level 1 Carbon Label; Magotan B9 earned C-GCAP Low-Carbon Five-Star Certification.
- All five production bases are 'waste-free factories', including four national-level 'green factories' and three 'zero-carbon factories'.
Why this matters
The recognition highlights FAW-Volkswagen's progress in cutting carbon emissions, with innovations like a digital painting process reducing CO2 by 8,521 tons annually and a commitment to green steel and clean electricity.
