Hyundai Motor and Kia Validate 1,000 Measurement Points per Vehicle at Digital Measuring Center

Hyundai Motor and Kia's Digital Measuring Center at Namyang R&D Center uses CMMs and 3D scanners to measure 1,000 points per vehicle, ensuring dimensional precision.

What Happened

Hyundai Motor and Kia operate a Digital Measuring Center (DMC) at their Namyang R&D Center in South Korea to ensure dimensional precision in every vehicle. The facility uses Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) systems to measure up to 1,000 points on a single vehicle body structure across 600 parametric quality criteria. This data-driven approach targets four key quality areas: exterior quality, NVH, water tightness, and function and assembly feasibility.

Key quality verification areas
  • Exterior quality
  • NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)
  • Water tightness
  • Function and assembly feasibility

The DMC begins by measuring the vehicle body structure with contact sensors, then moves to movable components like doors and liftgates using optical 3D scanners on robotic arms. Autonomous mobile robots transport parts for inspection. In the assembly verification lab, portable scanners validate component fit before final assembly, and the final validation stage scans the complete vehicle to analyze accumulated dimensional variation.

The goal of DMC is to elevate the entire Hyundai Motor Group’s digital measurement capabilities to the next level. By integrating measurement, analysis and data management capabilities, we are raising vehicle quality standards. Through this, we are strengthening dimensional quality verification related to functionality to further refine the driving quality, quietness and durability that customers

All DMC data flows into an integrated analytical framework, including the DATA-FIT algorithm for optimal assembly configurations and DATA-AUDIT for improvement recommendations. The DMC plans to leverage accumulated measurement data to build AI-based data infrastructure. This centralized approach enables faster root-cause analysis and supports data-driven decision-making across development.

Previously from Kia

This article is part of a series on Hyundai Motor Group's digital R&D infrastructure at the Namyang R&D Center. Earlier coverage highlighted the Group's driving simulator, which compresses months of track testing into hours of simulation.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of Kia's official releases.

Why this matters

Dimensional precision directly affects vehicle quality, preventing water leaks and wind noise. By measuring 1,000 points per vehicle, Hyundai and Kia transform quality management from reactive to data-driven, improving reliability for customers. This approach helps engineers identify issues early, benefiting production and final vehicle quality.
