What Happened

Kia Corporation announced on July 31, 2026 that it has completed its Green Light Project (GLP) initiatives in Albania and Zimbabwe and handed operations over to local communities. Albania and Zimbabwe are the 13th and 14th GLP sites to complete the transition, leaving five remaining sites that Kia will continue to support through 2027. Kia plans to monitor both projects over the coming years to support stable local operation and long-term sustainability.

Albania and Zimbabwe are the 13th and 14th GLP sites to complete the transition process. As Kia's flagship global social contribution program, GLP helps communities build sustainable foundations in healthcare, education and economic opportunity, with the long-term goal of enabling community-led self-reliance.

In Albania, Kia has partnered with World Vision since 2023 to improve healthcare access and support economic self-reliance for families of children with disabilities in and around Librazhd. The region has elevated disability rates linked to historical mining-related contamination, and its mountainous geography limits access to healthcare. Kia supported construction of a Multi-Purpose Healthcare Center, mobile rehabilitation services using Kia vehicles, homecare education programs for caregivers, and agricultural production support with improved market access. Approximately 4,300 people gained access to healthcare services and income-generation opportunities.

In Zimbabwe, Kia has worked with Korea Food for the Hungry International since 2023 to strengthen economic self-reliance in Wedza, where agriculture and mining face climate change, limited irrigation, and inadequate equipment and safety resources. Kia supported agricultural infrastructure including solar-powered water systems, irrigation and fish farming, plus mining equipment, safety gear, workplace improvements such as a workers' rest area, and community outreach training using Kia vehicles. Approximately 34,000 local residents benefited from improved living conditions, increased income and skills development.

Why this matters

This handover means local groups in rural Albania and Zimbabwe now run healthcare, farming, mining and mobility programs Kia helped build. It also shows Kia's model of stepping back once communities can operate independently, while it keeps supporting the remaining five sites through 2027.
