The automaker said the Kia Sportage, Seltos and Sorento SUVs drove the momentum. The Sportage led with 46,239 units sold worldwide, followed by the Seltos at 35,698 and the Sorento at 18,404.
Sales outside Korea climbed 7.4 percent year over year to 225,413 units in August, compared with 209,901 a year earlier and 242,587 in July. The Sportage was the top international seller at 42,365 units. The Seltos followed at 32,391 units and the K4 sedan at 17,519 units.
In Korea, sales fell 7.6 percent year over year to 40,213 units from 43,501, and dropped 26.4 percent from 54,604 in July. Kia attributed the decline to fewer working days during the summer holiday period. The Sorento led the Korean lineup with 6,397 units, followed by the Carnival MPV at 4,186 units and the Sportage at 3,874 units.
Special purpose vehicle (SPV) sales totaled 1,049 units in August, up 93.9 percent from 541 a year earlier and up 19.6 percent from 877 in July. SPV year-to-date sales reached 4,662 units, up 48.5 percent from 3,140 in the same period last year. Kia said it remains committed to region-specific electrification, featuring hybrids in the United States and electric vehicles in Europe, while leveraging its product portfolio and advanced powertrain technologies.

Why this matters
The results show Kia's global growth continuing even as its home market slips on summer holidays, with overseas buyers powering the gain. Strong demand for the Sportage, Seltos and Sorento SUVs shows that Kia's model mix is resonating with consumers outside Korea. Kia says it will keep pushing region-specific electrification—hybrids in the U.S. and EVs in Europe—which helps explain what kind of models shoppers can expect in those markets.
