Kodiak Stays on Track for Year-End Driverless Long-Haul Launch as Safety Case Readiness Hits 93%

Kodiak AI says its driverless long-haul safety case is 93% complete, keeping the company on target to launch highway commercial service without a driver in the cab by the end of 2026.

What Happened

Kodiak AI said it remains on track to launch driverless long-haul commercial service by the end of 2026. The company's Autonomy Readiness Measure, or ARM, for long-haul driverless operations reached 93% at the end of August, up from 91% at the end of July. ARM measures the percentage of claims and evidence in Kodiak's safety case for driverless operations that are materially complete.

Driverless long-haul commercial service expected to launch

What makes this measure powerful is that we know exactly what stands between us and driver-out long-haul operations, and that list continues to get shorter month after month. We have identified and scheduled the remaining work, which is concentrated on final engineering verification and validation activities. We expect to complete the safety case before year’s end and launch driverless long-haul service.
Don Burnette, founder and CEO, Kodiak

Kodiak's safety case is a structured argument, supported by evidence, that the Kodiak Driver can operate safely in a defined operating environment. The long-haul safety case builds on the safety case the company completed for its industrial deployment in the Permian Basin, where 35 driverless trucks were operating commercially with no humans in the cab as of the end of the second quarter. The Kodiak Driver uses a single AI architecture across use cases, with a distinct safety case for each operating environment.

The confidence to remove the driver is something a program builds, and we have built ours deliberately. Rigorous hazard analysis, mitigations designed into the system and its operation, safety engineering rigor on the parts that matter most, and continual validation that the assumptions behind our safety argument continue to hold. That discipline is what makes us confident in the path ahead.
Frank Fratrik, Director of Safety, Kodiak

Previously from Kodiak Robotics, Inc.

Kodiak has been building toward public-road driverless trucking. It obtained a California DMV permit to test heavy-duty autonomous trucks with a safety driver on public roads, the first time such vehicles have been allowed on the state's roads. Atlas Energy Solutions plans to expand its Kodiak-powered driverless fleet in the Permian Basin to 100 trucks by mid-2027. Kodiak has also announced an AMD collaboration using EPYC processors in its seventh-generation autonomous truck platform to process sensor data faster.

Why this matters

A driverless long-haul launch would put semi-trucks on public highways with no human in the cab, a major step for autonomous trucking. Kodiak's Autonomy Readiness Measure tracks how much of its safety evidence is complete, so hitting 93% signals the company has a defined, shrinking list of engineering and validation tasks left before launch. The company already operates 35 driverless trucks commercially in the Permian Basin industrial environment, experience it says it is building on for highway operations.
