Tesla is preparing charging locations reserved for its driverless fleet, while squeezing more use out of its existing public plugs overnight.

What Happened
Tesla plans to build Supercharger locations set aside for its robotaxis, a step Max de Zegher of Tesla Charging described in a public post. The company will keep leaning on its public charging network where it can, particularly overnight when stalls are idle. Charging costs sit at the center of the plan, de Zegher said. “Every penny matters for Robotaxi scale, including charging. We're using public Superchargers where we can, especially at night when utilization is low. We're also building dedicated Robotaxi Superchargers: back-to-back sessions, low-cost real estate close to demand, low capex.”

Getting robotaxis to chargers draws on the same Trip Planner fundamentals Tesla has spent more than ten years developing, de Zegher said. For now, a person still has to plug the cars in, which he described as a temporary arrangement. At public Superchargers, vehicles carrying passengers are served first, while robotaxis can be dispatched more flexibly. Tesla says it will keep adding sites to match robotaxi charging needs and sharpen robotaxi orchestration as its fleet expands.

Why this matters
