Volkswagen targets 9 percent operating margin with plan to halve lineup and trim 50,000 jobs

The Volkswagen Group has ratified an extensive operational overhaul targeting a 9 percent return on sales by removing half its vehicle lineup and eliminating 50,000 jobs worldwide.

2030 Margin Goal

What Happened

Supervisory board directors at the Volkswagen Group approved Future Plan 2030, an efficiency roadmap intended to counter margin erosion that compressed first-half profitability to 3.8 percent. The strategy sets an annual global volume ambition of 9 million deliveries while restoring corporate margins to 9 percent within four years.

Operating Margin Objective

9%

Up from 3.8% in H1 2026

Targeted Lineup Reduction

50%

Model catalog cut in half

Planned Workforce Elimination

50,000

Bringing decadal cuts to ~100,000

To streamline engineering overhead, Volkswagen will slash vehicle build combinations and option permutations by 75 percent through 2035 alongside halving its nameplates. The newly mandated 50,000 staff departures push cumulative decadal workforce reductions toward 100,000 personnel across global operations.

The framework places domestic German production under review, leaving production schedules beyond 2030 unresolved for car plants in Hanover, Zwickau, Emden, and Neckarsulm. The group will also sunset the Seat badge before the decade concludes, transitioning its Martorell factory resources behind the Cupra sub-brand.

Why this matters

Squeezed by lower margins in China and elevated European operating overhead, the German automotive conglomerate is downsizing product complexity to lower its structural breakeven point. Phasing out overlapping model variants and reassessing German manufacturing sites marks a strategic pivot to protect cash generation.
