What Happened

Aptiv, a global industrial technology company, celebrated NASA's successful Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years. The company's VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) provided the software platform for deterministic performance on the Space Launch System's first stage and the Orion crew vehicle. VxWorks has powered dozens of NASA missions, including Mars rovers and the James Webb Space Telescope.

"Artemis II is a reminder of what is possible when the right software underpins the right mission," said Jay Bellissimo, Senior Vice President and President of Intelligent Systems at Aptiv. Paul Miller, CTO of Software and Services, added, "For nearly 30 years, our teams have worked to make software that performs without fail when it matters most."

A critical layer of crew safety was the Orion Backup Flight System (BFS), built with a different architecture to avoid common failure modes. Aptiv's digital twin simulation enabled validation of every line of software before running on hardware, with 80-90% of simulation models reusable for future missions.

Why this matters

This shows how specialized industrial software enables safe human spaceflight, demonstrating reliability in the most demanding environments.

Terms in This Story

VxWorks
A real-time operating system (RTOS) used in mission-critical applications requiring high reliability and safety.
RTOS
A real-time operating system that ensures deterministic response times for critical tasks.
Artemis II
NASA's first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years, sending four astronauts around the Moon.
Backup Flight System (BFS)
A redundant flight system with independent architecture to ensure crew safety in case of primary system failure.
