The first-generation A3 (8L, 1996–2003) launched as a three-door hatchback, added quattro all-wheel drive to the compact class in September 1998, and gained a five-door version and the S3 at the beginning of 1999. The second generation (8P, 2003–2013) grew in length, wheelbase and width and brought the Sportback in September 2004, an S3 five-door in 2008, the first A3 Cabriolet in 2008 and the RS 3 in 2011 with a 250 kW (340 PS) five-cylinder engine. The third generation (8V, 2012–2020) was the first Audi based on the modular transverse matrix and brought cylinder-on-demand technology. The fourth generation (8Y, on the market since 2020) added a 48-volt mild hybrid system, the 2021 RS 3 with a torque splitter, and the A3 allstreet in 2024.
From day one the model series has been produced at the Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt. In response to high demand, local production was added at the Brazilian plant in São José dos Pinhais in 1999, and in the early 2000s production expanded to the Győr plant operated by Audi Hungaria. Audi says the A3 has been delivered to more than 100 countries and is one of the most successful model series in the brand's history.
Previously from Audi
Audi has begun building the fully electric A2 e-tron in Ingolstadt, saying the project took 21 months less development time and far fewer parts than previous models. The A2 e-tron was presented in Paris as the brand's most efficient model, consuming just 12.8 kWh per 100 km with up to 646 km of WLTP range.

Why this matters
Audi says the A3 established the premium compact class, a segment that grew to matter across the industry. Over three decades the series brought features such as quattro all-wheel drive, dual-clutch transmissions, assistance systems and a plug-in hybrid into smaller cars. With more than six million built and deliveries to over 100 countries, it has been central to Audi's identity and to production at Ingolstadt, São José dos Pinhais and Győr.
