BMW M builds its one-millionth vehicle in Munich as the plant prepares for an all-electric 2027

BMW M has built its one-millionth vehicle — an M3 in special Fire Orange III paint — at Plant Munich, which will also build the first fully-electric BMW M3 and go all-electric from 2027.

What Happened

BMW M has celebrated production of its one-millionth vehicle, a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III special paintwork and built at BMW Group Plant Munich. The car was presented at an official ceremony by Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich, to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. The milestone comes after more than five decades of BMW M and 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3. Munich will also produce the fully-electric BMW M3, the first high-performance model with BMW M Neue Klasse technology and the second Neue Klasse model built at the plant after the fully-electric BMW i3.

“BMW M combines road and racetrack capabilities with everyday practicality. The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still very much appreciated by our customers, 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3. This motivates us to continuously develop our BMW M high-performance vehicle portfolio based on BMW M Neue Klasse technology, including fully-electric models, in line with our core brand promise.”
— Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH

The fully-electric BMW M3 will be manufactured exclusively at BMW Group's main plant, a site that has been producing vehicles for more than 100 years and where production of the current BMW M3 generation got underway in 2020. BMW says the plant was successfully remodelled for electrification during ongoing production, and that modern production structures, systematic digitalisation and close cooperation with development teams and suppliers will allow a high-performance model like the fully-electric M3 to keep being built efficiently in Munich. From 2027 onwards, the BMW Group's main plant will produce only fully-electric vehicles. The company says the decision underlines Munich's future viability as a production location and the site's strategic role in its global production network.

“The BMW M3 has close ties to the BMW Group's main plant in Munich. We are delighted that we will also be producing the first fully-electric BMW M3 here in Munich. BMW M has a special emotional significance for our associates here – so we are especially proud to be actively shaping the future of this icon.”
— Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich
Milestones for the M3 and Plant Munich
  1. 2020

  3. 2027

BMW Group's main plant in Munich starts producing only fully-electric vehicles.

The BMW Group is investing a total of around 650 million euros in transforming Plant Munich into a production site exclusively for fully-electric vehicles. As part of that work, a new body shop and a cutting-edge vehicle assembly, including new logistics areas, were built on about a third of the plant site's total area. The site combines a long tradition of building sporty BMW models with the transformation towards electromobility.

Previously from BMW

BMW has been preparing for the Neue Klasse roll-out across its production and supply network. On 1 October 2026 the group officially opened its new Plant Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Bavaria, where series production of sixth-generation high-voltage batteries for the BMW i3 began on two shifts.

Why this matters

The one-millionth M car is a milestone for BMW's performance brand, but the bigger signal is where it was built: BMW's main plant, which has been producing for more than 100 years, will build only fully-electric vehicles from 2027, including the first fully-electric BMW M3. That directly affects the Munich associates who build the M3, and it shows buyers and competitors how BMW M plans to go electric.
