What Happened
The new BMW iX4 is the next Neue Klasse model from BMW: a fully electric Sports Utility Vehicle in coupé form that the company calls a technological leap forward into a new era. Two drive system variants will be available at launch in March 2027, followed shortly afterwards by the range-topping, extremely powerful BMW iX4 M60 xDrive. Like all iX4 variants, the flagship has one electric motor at the front axle and one at the rear. BMW says the car's dynamic looks underscore clear sporting instincts, and that it showcases its own, particularly expressive interpretation of the reduced-to-the-essential Neue Klasse design.
“With the new fully electric BMW iX4, we are expanding the Neue Klasse portfolio with a particularly emotional vehicle. Its striking proportions, elegant coupé silhouette and Neue Klasse technologies combine to create a truly distinctive character. Blending sportiness, expressive design and innovative technology, the BMW iX4 sets a bold new accent within our fully electric BMW portfolio.”

The iX4's sporty roofline links up with its long wheelbase and short overhangs to create a coupé-like silhouette, while the front end merges the BMW kidneys and twin headlights into a single graphic unit. The flagship M60 xDrive is shaped by elements of the new BMW M design language and racing-car-inspired M Yellow Lights, and gets a special M rear spoiler, while the standard car's pronounced rear spoiler has an integral brake light. A large-surface panoramic sunroof with climate comfort glazing is standard and bathes the interior in light. Customers can initially choose from nine exterior colour shades, joined from March 2027 by three Frozen paint finishes and later by numerous additional colours from the BMW Individual range, plus seven different interiors.
The M Sport package is standard and brings 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and M Sport brakes with blue callipers, the M60 xDrive gets 21-inch light-alloy wheels, and all models can be ordered with wheels up to 22 inches, one of which is reserved for the M Performance model. Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X combines the BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch Central Display and a standard-fit sports steering wheel, with My Modes to customise sound, light, displays and drive system, and BMW Digital Premium bringing M-specific in-car apps. The software-defined iX4 also uses the Heart of Joy high-performance computer, which BMW says works ten times faster than previous systems and reduces the number of control inputs required. The flat high-voltage battery helps deliver an extremely low centre of gravity, the M60 xDrive comes as standard with adaptive M suspension — optional on the other models — and an electronically controlled M locking differential at the rear axle, while the Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving up to 130 km/h (81 mph) in numerous countries.
The range-topping BMW iX4 M60 xDrive can be ordered.
The two launch variants, the BMW iX4 50 xDrive and BMW iX4 40 xDrive, become available.
Three additional Frozen paint finishes join the initial nine exterior colours.
Why this matters
The iX4 is BMW's next Neue Klasse model — the purpose-built electric family the brand is using to define its EV era — so it previews technology likely to spread across its electric line-up. Buyers get three all-wheel-drive variants with up to 828 km (514 miles) of range and 400 kW DC charging, aimed squarely at the two biggest worries about electric cars: range and charging time.
