What Happened

BorgWarner has secured a new eTurbo program with a major European OEM for an advanced hybrid passenger car application. Production is scheduled to begin in 2029. The award strengthens BorgWarner's leading position in electrified boosting technologies.

This new award underlines the strength of our eTurbo technology and the trust our customers place in BorgWarner's electrified boosting solutions. By continuing to evolve our proven 400-volt eTurbo platform, we are helping our customers meet some of the industry's most demanding requirements for performance, efficiency and emissions compliance.

eTurbo electrical power

20 kW continuous / 30 kW peakkW

Provides instant power and enables energy recuperation from exhaust.

The BorgWarner eTurbo integrates a high-speed electric motor on the turbo shaft to actively drive the compressor, eliminating turbo lag and enabling faster boost pressure build-up. Excess exhaust energy is converted into electrical energy and fed back into the vehicle's high-voltage system instead of being lost through a conventional wastegate. The new program introduces remote power electronics for flexible positioning within the vehicle, supporting integration into challenging packaging environments.

The system is designed for operating speeds up to 145,000 rpm and exhaust gas temperatures above 1,000°C. It combines advanced cooling strategies with high-performance silicon carbide based power electronics to ensure efficiency, durability, and reliability. The eTurbo helps automakers meet upcoming emissions regulations such as Euro 7, SULEV, and China National 6b by eliminating fuel enrichment at high load, reducing exhaust backpressure, and converting exhaust energy into usable electrical power.

Why this matters

This deal expands BorgWarner's electrified boosting business and reinforces its leadership in hybrid technology. The eTurbo improves performance and efficiency by eliminating turbo lag and recuperating energy, helping automakers meet strict emissions standards like Euro 7. It is the only 400-volt eTurbo in series production, giving BorgWarner a unique position.

Terms in This Story

eTurbo
An electrically assisted turbocharger that uses a high-speed electric motor to drive the compressor, eliminating turbo lag and enabling energy recuperation.
turbo lag
The delay between pressing the accelerator and the turbocharger providing boost, causing a temporary lack of power.
recuperation
The process of capturing and storing energy that would otherwise be wasted, such as from exhaust gases, to improve efficiency.
silicon carbide
A semiconductor material used in high-performance power electronics that offers higher efficiency and thermal conductivity than traditional silicon.
