CATL and BMW Sign MOU to Deepen Cooperation on Battery Passport and Decarbonization
2012
What Happened
On February 25, CATL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the BMW Group in Beijing to strengthen collaboration on pilot projects for trusted data exchange and decarbonization across the power battery supply chain. The agreement was signed during the visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to China, alongside a high-level German business delegation.
Under the MOU, the two companies will collaborate on cross-border data transfer under the Battery Passport scenario, deepening cooperation in carbon accounting methodologies and innovative tools for calculating battery carbon footprints. The pilot projects will leverage the Catena-X standardized automotive data ecosystem to support technical standards alignment and drive long-term industrial stability.
CATL and BMW have been strategic partners since 2012, with collaboration spanning battery production, joint research and development, and sustainable supply chains. The new MOU expands the partnership from product-level cooperation to broader institutional coordination, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing electric mobility and enhancing compliance with EU market access regulations.
Why this matters
The partnership aims to align data standards and carbon accounting methods, supporting regulatory compliance for China-EU battery trade and advancing sustainable electric mobility.
