CATL Launches World’s Largest Energy Storage Validation Testbed in Xiamen
RMB 3 billion (~$440 million)
10 hectares
121 GWh
What Happened
The energy storage industry faces a gap between installed capacity and real-world performance. Nearly one in five large-scale storage stations underperform, and 46.5% of systems experience grid-connection delays over two months. CATL's ESVL aims to bridge this gap by offering station-level validation that covers safety, grid support, and long-term reliability before deployment.
Began developing 100 MWh-class lithium-ion battery storage technology.
Achieved breakthrough in long-life zero-degradation technology.
Energy storage battery sales reached 121 GWh, with 30.4% global market share.
ESVL officially commenced operations in Xiamen, China.
“Scientific rigor is more critical than ever as energy storage enters the gigawatt era. That means being honest about equipment performance, respectful of grid dynamics and disciplined in testing results — while raising industry quality standards to the station level and bringing validation forward to the pre-delivery stage. ESVL is designed to reflect that rigor, and to help usher in a more truste”

Facility spans 10 hectares.
Why this matters
With nearly one in five large-scale storage stations underperforming, the industry needs credible station-level validation. ESVL provides open, independent testing to improve safety, reliability, and bankability of energy storage assets.
Terms in This Story
- Station-level validation
- Testing an entire energy storage system as a complete unit connected to the grid, rather than testing individual components.
- Grid-forming capability
- The ability of a power source, like a battery system, to establish and maintain grid voltage and frequency on its own.
- EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) testing
- Testing to ensure electronic equipment does not emit harmful electromagnetic interference and can operate properly in its electromagnetic environment.
