Daimler Buses and partners test electric coach demonstrator with over 500 km range
Daimler Buses and its ELCH project partners took a joint drive in their battery-electric coach demonstrator in Neu-Ulm, a milestone in a publicly funded effort to build a coach with more than 500 kilometers of range.

What Happened
Daimler Buses and its project partners reached an important milestone in the funded "Electrified Coach" project, known as "ELCH": at the beginning of October, the partners came together in Neu-Ulm for their final in-person consortium meeting. The highlight was a joint drive in the technology demonstrator developed under the project, which is designed for a range of more than 500 kilometers. The funded project will continue until the end of 2026. The joint drive served to test and validate the technical concepts under practical conditions, and the partners also discussed progress to date and coordinated next steps leading up to the project's completion.

- Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, ITIV institute): analysis and processing of vehicle data and optimization of the electric coach's operating strategy
- University of Mannheim (MISES): assessment of the economic viability of battery-electric coach concepts for different usage profiles and analysis of their competitiveness
- University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), represented by the iMAD and SAM institutes: potential improvements in lightweight construction and aerodynamics to reduce energy consumption and increase range
- Flix SE: real-world operational and deployment data from long-distance coach services and support for developing practical application and driving cycles
Project partners hold their final in-person consortium meeting in Neu-Ulm and take a joint drive in the technology demonstrator.
The funded ELCH project is scheduled to conclude.
Daimler Buses aims to offer battery-electric coaches.
Through the project, Daimler Buses and its partners are working to create the technological and economic prerequisites for the electric coach of the future, with the objective of developing and validating a market-ready battery-electric coach concept. Beyond the drive system and battery, the project focuses on energy consumption, aerodynamics, lightweight construction, economic viability and practical suitability for coach operations. The consortium is also examining the technical, economic and operational prerequisites for using battery-electric coaches in long-distance transport. The results are intended to provide an important basis for the further electrification of the coach segment at Daimler Buses and for the development of future vehicle concepts and technologies.
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy with a total of €6.26 million, as part of the "Competition for Electrified Heavy-Duty and Passenger Transport" funding call under the Elektro-Mobil funding program, with funding reference 01MV22010A-E. The funding program is implemented by the DLR Project Management Agency.
Previously from Daimler Truck AG
Daimler Buses is also building out electric bus infrastructure: in late September 2026 it announced plans for its third public charging location for electric buses, at Hamburg Central Bus Station, with four fast-charging stations and commissioning set for 2027. At group level, Daimler Truck reported on October 8, 2026 that its third-quarter unit sales rose 26% to 91,260 vehicles, even as battery-electric truck and bus deliveries fell 28%.

Why this matters
Daimler Buses aims to offer battery-electric coaches by the end of the decade, and this funded project is meant to supply the technical and economic groundwork. Range, energy consumption and running costs decide whether electric coaches can replace diesel on long-distance routes, so the results matter to coach operators, passengers and the researchers and supplier partners involved.
