DENSO Invests in Next Core Technologies to Enhance EV Performance
2026
What Happened
DENSO has invested in Next Core Technologies (NCT) to jointly develop motor cores using iron-based amorphous alloys, which significantly reduce iron loss and improve motor efficiency. The investment aims to establish mass production of these cores for next-generation motor generators used in BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs.
As the adoption of electric vehicles grows, demand for higher power efficiency increases. Reducing power loss in motor generators is essential for extending driving range and improving performance. Iron-based amorphous alloys are a promising material to achieve high-efficiency motors.
DENSO and NCT will combine NCT's materials and processing expertise with DENSO's motor generator product development experience to accelerate joint development. This initiative contributes to extending EV driving range and enhancing driving performance.
Why this matters
Iron-based amorphous alloys can significantly reduce energy loss in motor cores, improving motor efficiency and extending EV driving range. This collaboration aims to mass-produce these advanced cores.
Terms in This Story
- Motor Core
- An iron core inside a motor that conducts magnetic flux. It is manufactured by stacking thin electromagnetic steel sheets and significantly impacts motor performance, efficiency, and heat generation.
- Iron-Based Amorphous Alloy
- A metallic material with a non-crystalline atomic structure, enabling significant reduction of iron loss. It is hard and brittle, making processing and mass production challenging.
- Motor Generator (MG)
- A core motor installed in BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs that serves as the primary driving force during startup and driving, while also generating electricity during deceleration.
- Iron Loss
- Energy loss generated in the iron core of motors.
