What Happened
General Motors works with roughly 20,000 suppliers in 120 countries to produce the tens of thousands of parts that go into its vehicles. Nearly 70% of a car's value comes from outside GM, according to Shilpan Amin, senior vice president and chief procurement and supply chain officer. Suppliers range from component manufacturers to software developers and logistics providers, collaborating with GM engineers to optimize every part.
“Nothing is a hundred percent supplier driven; nothing is a hundred percent GM driven. You have this collaboration between suppliers and GM that helps us find the right materials, the right shapes, the right technology and layout, how each part links together in the vehicle.”

Of a car's value is created by suppliers, not GM.
This week GM celebrated its 34th annual Supplier of the Year honors, recognizing about 100 suppliers from its global base. The company also grants Overdrive Awards for innovation and crisis management; this year Dolby Laboratories received one for bringing Dolby Atmos to Cadillac EVs. In total, 103 winners from 14 countries were honored, including 16 first-time winners and 8 with 20 or more wins.
