What Happened

Škoda Auto is celebrating 30 years of the Octavia, a nameplate revived from a historic model. CEO Klaus Zellmer calls the car an icon that has delivered space, practicality, safety and features at exceptional value for three decades. The original Octavia was produced between 1959 and 1971, and development of its revival began in 1992, one year after Škoda Auto joined the Volkswagen Group.

  3. 1996-2000

First generation launches: liftback unveiled 4 April 1996, production starts 3 September; Combi, AWD and RS follow by 2000.

  4. 2004-2013

Second generation debuts in 2004 and ends in 2013 with 2.6 million units.

  5. 2019-2024

Fourth generation debuts in November 2019 and is updated in early 2024.

The first-generation liftback, styled by then Head of Design Dirk van Braeckel, launched on 4 April 1996 with a 528-litre boot, and series production began on 3 September that year. A new production facility in Mladá Boleslav raised annual capacity from 90,000 to 350,000 vehicles. In total, 1.44 million first-generation units were produced, with selected variants remaining in production until 2010 even after the second generation appeared in 2004.

The second generation built on the first, adding 32 litres of boot space, a DSG dual-clutch transmission, and better practicality; production ended in 2013 with 2.6 million units made. The third generation, built from 2012 to 2020, introduced driver assistance systems from higher segments, a lighter body, optimised TSI and TDI engines, and a GreenLine version with fuel-saving technologies. Its 2017 facelift brought split headlights, glass-finish infotainment screens and upgraded assistance systems.

The fourth-generation Octavia debuted in November 2019 as a liftback and Combi, and an update in early 2024 improved connectivity and safety. It can have up to ten airbags and assistance systems including Attention and Drowsiness Assist, with a new algorithm that more accurately assesses driver fatigue. The Octavia remains popular among private and business customers internationally and has won awards including multiple Best Cars titles and the Golden Steering Wheel.

“The Octavia has been an icon of the Škoda brand for three decades. As Combi or Liftback, it has consistently delivered what customers prefer: outstanding space, practicality, safety, and features at an exceptional value. In many ways, the Octavia defined the Škoda ambition to offer more than expected. This has resulted in the Octavia powering our international growth by earning the trust of gener
