Mercedes-Benz Electric C-Class Cuts Lifecycle CO₂ by Two-Thirds, Offers Vegan Interior

Mercedes-Benz's new all-electric C-Class reduces its lifecycle CO₂ footprint by about two-thirds compared to the current combustion-engine C-Class, verified by independent auditors.

Lifecycle CO₂ reduction vs. combustion C-Class
~66%
WLTP range (C 400 4MATIC)
762 km
Range added in 10 min fast charge
325 km
Solar capacity at Kecskemét plant
42.3 MWp

What Happened

The new electric C-Class is built from the ground up as a battery-electric vehicle, marking Mercedes-Benz's next step in electrifying the midsize segment. According to the company's 360° Environmental Check, the vehicle's lifecycle CO₂ emissions are roughly two-thirds lower than the current combustion C-Class. The check is verified by independent auditors and covers everything from material sourcing to production, use, and end-of-life.

Lifecycle CO₂ reduction

~66%percent

compared to current combustion C-Class

Key sustainability measures
  • CO₂-reduced aluminum for about two-thirds of aluminum needs, sourced from electrolysis with renewable energy or higher recycled content
  • Around 45 kg of steel from electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy
  • Nearly 49 kg of recycled thermoplastics – more than quadrupled compared to current C-Class
  • Vegan interior certified by The Vegan Society, featuring recycled materials in seats, headliner, and trim
  • Multi-source heat pump that uses one-third the energy of a comparable electric heater
Charging and range highlights
  1. 10 minutes

Up to 325 km of range added via DC fast charging (ISO/SAE 12906 conditions)

  2. Full charge

WLTP range up to 762 km; upcoming rear-drive variant expected up to 800 km

Production at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary uses solar power with a total capacity of 42.3 MWp, covering about 25% of the plant's annual energy needs. The new paint shop reduces energy consumption by 20% and CO₂ emissions by 80% compared to the previous facility. Mercedes-Benz also enforces Responsible Sourcing Standards for suppliers, with binding CO₂ reduction targets for steel, aluminum, plastics, and battery cells.

Regenerative braking power

300kW

up to 99% of braking via recuperation

Sustainable mobility means looking at the entire lifecycle – from raw material extraction to recycling. With the new electric C-Class, we are setting new standards in the midsize segment.
Mercedes-Benz press release

Previously from Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz recently deepened its partnership with Hydro to become the first automaker in Europe to use Hydro CIRCAL in series production – recycled aluminum with 75% post-consumer content. This aligns with the electric C-Class's use of CO₂-reduced aluminum from electrolysis with renewable energy or higher recycled content.

Background drawn from MotorClaw's earlier coverage of Mercedes-Benz's official releases.

Why this matters

This shows how automakers are moving beyond tailpipe emissions to tackle the full environmental impact of electric vehicles, from raw materials to production and charging. Buyers concerned about sustainability can see concrete reductions, and suppliers face new demands for CO₂-reduced materials like aluminum and steel.

Terms in This Story

WLTP
Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure – the standard for measuring fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions in new cars.
Rezyklat
German for recycled material; here refers to post-consumer or post-industrial recycled plastics.
Rekuperation
Regenerative braking – capturing kinetic energy during deceleration to recharge the battery.
The Vegan Society
An independent organization that certifies products free of animal-derived materials.
