What Happened

Opel, Stellantis Germany and VGP celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the grEEn-campus on Mainzer Straße in Rüsselsheim. Structural work on the central parts of the administration building is largely complete, and interior fit-out is now beginning in stages. The campus will become the new global Opel headquarters and the headquarters of Stellantis Germany, enabling modern, flexible working in a sustainable environment.

Project schedule
  1. 2 September 2026

Topping-out ceremony for the grEEn-campus marks the largely completed structural work on the central parts of the administration building.

  2. Second half of 2027

Construction work on the campus is due to be completed.

With today's topping-out ceremony, we are celebrating the fact that our grEEn-campus is continuing to take shape. Here, we are creating a modern and sustainable working environment that focusses on the needs of our employees and offers space for collaboration, creativity and innovation. This investment sends a strong signal about the future of our site. With the grEEn-campus, we are implementing a key element of our 'Future Plan Germany' and strengthening Rüsselsheim as a modern centre for development and innovation.
Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel & Vauxhall and Managing Director of Stellantis Germany
With the grEEn-campus, we are sustainably developing a historic industrial site and transforming it into a new, future-proof use. The topping-out ceremony marks an important milestone in this process. Together with Opel, Stellantis Germany and the city of Rüsselsheim, we are creating space for research, innovation and modern working environments.
Jan Van Geet, CEO of the VGP Group
With the grEEn-campus, the transformation of the historic Opel site is becoming visible step by step. At a time of far-reaching changes in the automotive industry, such investments send an important signal for Rüsselsheim as a business location. The grEEn-campus represents a strong commitment to the city's sustainable development and demonstrates its potential for innovation, high-quality jobs and economic strength.
Patrick Burghardt, Lord Mayor of Rüsselsheim am Main
grEEn-campus components
  • Plot area of 114,000 square metres.
  • Administration building with about 23,000 square metres, housing the Opel and Stellantis Germany headquarters.
  • Research and development building with a design centre on about 36,000 square metres, where all Opel models will be designed and engineered.
  • Car park with about 55,000 square metres.
  • State-of-the-art workspaces will support flexible working and teamwork.

The campus is seeking DGNB certification in gold, with a focus on reducing CO2 emissions in design (embodied carbon) and on sustainable building materials for a pleasant interior atmosphere. A photovoltaic system integrated into a green roof supplies power and contributes to biodiversity, a pleasant microclimate and building cooling. A geothermal system underneath the future car park, one of the largest of its kind in Germany, stores heat from the ground that highly efficient heat pumps use for year-round heating and cooling, largely powered by on-site solar electricity. The grEEn-campus is described as a flagship project within the 'Made for Germany' initiative, which brings together leading companies and investors to strengthen Germany as a business location.

Why this matters

The milestone shows the historic Opel site in Rüsselsheim becoming a modern campus for work, research and innovation. For employees, the new global Opel headquarters and Stellantis Germany headquarters promise flexible, sustainable workspaces; for the city and for Germany, the investment supports high-quality jobs and economic strength during a period of automotive change. The project also advances Opel's 'Future Plan Germany' and the cross-industry 'Made for Germany' initiative.
