Oshkosh Introduces AI-Enabled Contamination Detection for Refuse Trucks

Contaminants detected

more than 80

What Happened

Oshkosh Corporation, through its McNeilus business, has launched an artificial intelligence-enabled contamination detection system for refuse and recycling vehicles. Developed in collaboration with Lixo, the system uses computer vision and machine learning to identify over 80 contaminants as they are deposited into the hopper. The technology is available as a factory-installed option on new McNeilus vehicles and as a retrofit kit for existing fleets, and it integrates with the ClearSky telematics platform.

Contaminants identified

80+contaminants

Using computer vision and machine learning, the system can identify more than 80 contaminants with excellent accuracy.

Artificial intelligence and connected data systems are transforming how essential industries operate. At Oshkosh, we are integrating these technologies into the vehicles and equipment that support critical infrastructure to aid efficiency and sustainability in the communities they serve.
Jay Iyengar, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology and Strategic Sourcing Officer, Oshkosh Corporation
Key capabilities
  • Real-time contamination detection during refuse and recycling collection
  • Identifies more than 80 contaminants including plastic bags, yard waste, textiles, and hazardous materials
  • Available as factory-installed option on new McNeilus vehicles or as retrofit kit for mixed fleets
  • Integrates with McNeilus ClearSky telematics platform for fleet and operational data insights

Why this matters

This technology helps haulers and municipalities manage waste contamination, divert more waste from landfills, and meet regulatory goals by providing real-time data on what enters the waste stream.

Terms in This Story

edge computing
A computing model that processes data near the source (e.g., on the vehicle) rather than in a centralized cloud, reducing latency.
telematics
The use of telecommunications and informatics to send, receive, and store data about vehicle location, performance, and operation.
