Samsung SDI signs 1 GWh ESS supply deal with Alpha Omega Power, lifting total agreements to 1.5 GWh

Samsung SDI will build grid-scale energy storage systems for U.S. developer Alpha Omega Power at its Indiana cell plant, with the newly signed 1 GWh deal bringing their combined agreements to 1.5 GWh.

What Happened

Samsung SDI's Michigan-based subsidiary, Samsung SDI America (SDIA), has signed a 1 GWh agreement to supply energy storage system (ESS) solutions to Alpha Omega Power (AOP), a U.S. utility-scale battery storage developer and independent power producer. Including an initial contract signed late last year, the two agreements total 1.5 GWh. AOP plans to deploy the systems in large-scale power projects it describes as critical for grid reliability and power demand growth, with construction scheduled to begin in the WECC and ERCOT power markets next year.

Under the latest agreement, Samsung SDI will supply its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, a fully integrated ESS solution featuring nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries. All cells and modules will be manufactured at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant in Kokomo, Indiana, and delivered by the end of this year. The system uses high-capacity, high-nickel NCA chemistry and delivers 17% higher energy density than its predecessor, the SBB 1.5, while keeping the same 20-foot footprint. It is designed for 25 years of continuous use and incorporates AI-powered algorithms for early anomaly detection and battery life prediction.

Safety credentials of the SBB 1.7
  • Meets NFPA 855, the National Fire Protection Association's standard for the installation of stationary energy storage systems
  • Certified to UL 9540, a safety standard for energy storage systems
  • Uses proprietary Enhanced Direct Injection (EDI) technology that injects fire-extinguishing agents directly into individual battery modules
“American-made ESS from SAMSUNG SDI will play an important role in AOP's continued growth. This second agreement strengthens our domestic supply chain supporting the next generation of energy infrastructure.”
— Paul Choi, CEO of Alpha Omega Power
“Alpha Omega Power is one of the fastest growing independent power producers in the country, and the kind of sophisticated operator we want to partner with to tackle grid reliability challenges. With our differentiated technology and local production capabilities, we will continue to expand our business foundation and strengthen our position in the North American ESS market.”
— Fabrice Hudry, President ESS of SAMSUNG SDI America (SDIA) ESS Team

Samsung SDI says it has secured a series of ESS supply deals with U.S. energy companies this year and continues to discuss potential supply agreements with a number of local customers, with additional orders expected in the near future. Industry analysts attribute the company's recent contract wins in part to its prismatic battery technology, known as PrismStack, which is cited for strong performance and safety. Samsung SDI is currently the only non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries in North America. Its prismatic batteries, described as offering strong durability and fire safety compared with pouch-type batteries, have helped the company meet the requirements of U.S. energy companies.

Previously from Samsung SDI

Samsung SDI has been building out its U.S. prismatic battery business: in August 2026 it agreed with General Motors to co-develop next-generation prismatic EV batteries and to buy GM's 49.99% stake in their Indiana joint venture plant. Fire safety has also featured in its recent announcements — in July 2026 its uninterruptible power supply batteries became the first globally to pass UL Solutions' new Indoor Large-Scale Fire Test for AI data center energy storage.

Why this matters

The deal puts U.S.-made cells and modules at the center of grid-reliability projects in the WECC and ERCOT power markets, where Alpha Omega Power plans to start construction next year. Samsung SDI says it is currently the only non-Chinese supplier of prismatic ESS batteries in North America, so the contracts are a test of whether locally manufactured storage can win business from U.S. energy companies.

Terms in This Story
