Swaraj Tractors, Mahindra Susten commission 42 MWp solar project in Punjab to cover half of plant power
Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten have switched on a 42 MWp group captive solar project in Bathinda, Punjab, expected to supply around half of Swaraj's manufacturing electricity.

- around 50%
- about 61.54 million units
- more than 42,000 tonnes per year
What Happened
Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten announced on September 2, 2026, the commissioning of a 42 MWp group captive solar project at Village Teona Pujarian in Bathinda, Punjab. Swaraj Tractors is part of the Mahindra Group, and Mahindra Susten is the group's renewable energy platform and Independent Power Producer. The project is expected to meet around 50% of the electricity requirements of Swaraj's manufacturing, assembly and foundry operations in Mohali, with residual capacity proposed to help green electricity use by other Mahindra Group entities in Punjab. At commissioning, the installation is one of the largest group captive solar installations of its kind in Punjab.
The solar facility is spread across approximately 141 acres and uses high-efficiency N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules mounted on fixed-tilt structures. Developed and commissioned by Mahindra Susten, it is expected to generate about 61.54 million units of renewable electricity annually and offset more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. During development, environmental and social impact assessments and a climate change assessment were carried out. Measures were also introduced to manage waste, regulate vehicle movement and minimise disturbance to the surrounding ecology.
“Nearly half a century ago, Swaraj was founded on the principles of self-reliance and independence. At a time when India is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and progressing towards a greener environment for its people, Swaraj is proud to contribute through a two-pronged strategy: reducing energy consumption and progressively replacing conventional sources with renewable energy.”
Swaraj Tractors is established.
All Swaraj tractor manufacturing plants achieve EP100 certification for doubling energy productivity.
Swaraj receives the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence.
The 42 MWp solar project in Bathinda is commissioned.
- Location: Village Teona Pujarian, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, across about 141 acres.
- Modules: high-efficiency N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules on fixed-tilt structures.
- Expected generation: about 61.54 million units of renewable electricity per year.
- Expected CO2 offset: more than 42,000 tonnes per year.
- Domestic sourcing: more than 97% of components sourced from within India.
- Water saving: robotic cleaning is expected to save an estimated 1.92 million litres of water annually.
“We are proud to partner with Swaraj Tractors in advancing its renewable energy transition and sustainability agenda. The commissioning of this project also marks Mahindra Susten's maiden foray into supplying power to creditworthy commercial and industrial customers through the group captive structure, complementing our traditional model of supplying power to government utilities.”
All Swaraj manufacturing plants are water positive and certified Zero Waste to Landfill facilities, and Swaraj's foundry was the first foundry operation in India to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill certification. The company is focusing on reducing product-related Scope 3 emissions, accelerating supplier decarbonisation, building ESG capabilities, expanding green dealership programmes and strengthening diversity. Swaraj received the Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency earlier this year and the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence in February 2026. Swaraj contributes to the Mahindra Group's Farm Equipment Business ambition of achieving threefold revenue growth this decade.
Why this matters
Tractor factories need a lot of electricity, and this 42 MWp solar project is expected to meet about half of Swaraj's manufacturing demand while cutting CO2 output by more than 42,000 tonnes a year. The commissioning also lets Mahindra Susten supply commercial customers through a group captive structure and, with over 97% Indian components, supports domestic renewable manufacturing — a step toward Mahindra's Planet Positive and Swaraj's low-carbon roadmap.
Terms in This Story
- Group captive solar project
- A solar installation that supplies power primarily for the owners' own use, usually through a shared arrangement among the companies consuming the electricity.
- MWp
- Megawatt-peak, a measure of a solar array's rated direct-current output under standard test conditions.
- Bifacial solar module
- A solar panel that can capture sunlight on both its front and rear surfaces, increasing energy output compared with a single-sided panel.
- Independent Power Producer
- A company that develops and operates power plants and sells electricity, typically to utilities or large customers, rather than being a regulated utility.
