What Happened
Tesla Energy officially enabled vehicle-to-home bidirectional capabilities for the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover under its Powershare Home Backup framework. The functionality allows an electric vehicle battery pack to serve as a supplementary energy reservoir during utility outages, feeding electrical current directly into a residential system.

Vehicle eligibility depends on internal power electronics hardware rather than a universal over-the-air firmware update. Vehicles ordered in the United States from October 1 carry an updated onboard inverter designated as PCS2 Lite, with earlier factory builds identifiable through the vehicle touchscreen's additional information panel.
To operate the bidirectional link, homeowners must have a Powerwall 3 storage unit paired with either a Universal Wall Connector or a third-generation Wall Connector. During a blackout, the vehicle battery discharges into the home circuit while recharging the stationary storage pack once the home battery draws down, providing multi-day energy continuity.
Why this matters
The update extends vehicle-to-home bidirectional energy transfer from the niche Cybertruck to Tesla's two highest-volume global nameplates. By requiring the Powerwall 3 and dedicated wall connectors, Tesla reinforces its integrated home energy ecosystem while turning customer vehicles into distributed grid-resilience assets.
