Reverse engineering is a key element of the approach: when original drawings, documentation or spare parts are no longer available, ZF Aftermarket can recreate the technical basis for repair or replacement. Engineers disassemble, document and measure a component before redesigning it where necessary, producing new drawings, bills of materials, technical documentation and dedicated ZF part numbers for both ZF and third-party components. Customers can then have components repaired, reproduced, replaced or upgraded, and complete units overhauled, tested and validated for continued service. For older, customised or low-volume applications in particular, reverse-engineered components can be a more cost-effective alternative to buying a new gearbox. In some cases redesigning specific parts can also address known reliability issues, improve long-term availability and reduce the need for premature replacement.

ZF has already delivered multi-brand rail projects in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, China and Thailand, with reference projects ranging from axle gearboxes to pump distribution gearboxes across a wide range of vehicle platforms, which the company says demonstrates global, growing demand for independent lifecycle support in the rail sector. The effort is led by ZF Aftermarket's Rail Center of Competence in close cooperation with local ZF entities. From national rail services to smaller local fleets, this lets operators benefit from consistent technical standards plus the flexibility of working with teams close to their respective markets and passengers.
