ZF LIFETEC's four-airbag safety concept targets reclined seating positions, series-ready in 2028

What Happened
ZF LIFETEC has developed an advanced airbag concept consisting of four modules: the Seat Ramp Airbag, Dual Contour Knee Airbag, Active Heel Airbag, and Dual Contour Airbag. These work together to protect the head, pelvis, and legs while reducing the risk of submarining—the occupant sliding under the seatbelt. The system adapts to seating position and seatback angle using sensor data.
ZF LIFETEC presents the occupant protection concept at AIRBAG 2026 in Mannheim, Germany.
All modules are scheduled to be ready for series production.
“With intelligently networked airbag systems, we stabilize occupant motion and specifically reduce the risk of submarining in the unlikely event of an accident.”
Why this matters
As vehicle automation enables reclined seating, traditional airbag designs may not provide adequate protection; ZF LIFETEC's concept addresses the new crash dynamics.
