What Happened
State-owned automaker BAIC Group finalized a comprehensive pact with battery manufacturer CATL to broaden their battery replenishment collaboration across vehicle development, swapping station construction, and energy services. Under the framework, BAIC will engineer battery-swappable variants across multiple subsidiary vehicle lines compatible with CATL's shared Choco-SEB infrastructure.
The initiative targets the deployment of a unified battery-swapping ecosystem capable of servicing one million vehicles across China. To facilitate rapid station expansion, BAIC will make its franchised dealership properties available for swap station installation, enabling dealers and CATL to jointly fund and manage charging and swapping facilities.
The arrangement broadens an initial 2024 pact between the two companies. BAIC's dedicated electric sub-brand Arcfox previously introduced the Beta S3 using CATL's swappable battery architecture earlier this year, followed by a swappable Beta T1 variant listed in state industrial catalog filings.
Why this matters
Connecting BAIC's passenger vehicle portfolio to CATL's Choco-SEB swap network accelerates multi-brand interoperability in China's battery-swapping market. Enlisting dealer franchises for infrastructure siting also solves land access constraints while lowering upfront station deployment costs.
